POVILAS / PAUL BERKAVICIUS

Doctor of Music and Doctor of Medicine.

Dean of the Lithuanian Academy of Music/Conservatory of Music from 1949 to 1975.

Virtuoso cellist- He was a virtuoso soloist, but played in chamber ensembles and symphony orchestras as well.

Champion Chess Player.

Awarded Medal as Freedom fighter for Estonian Liberation Army.

Studied at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1912 to1914, Trained at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and the St. Petersburg University(Medicine Faculty) in 1914-15. In 1921 graduated from the Tartu University (Estonia), Medicine Faculty.

He was Concertmaster at the Vanemuine Theatre in Tartu from 1914 to1926, Concertmaster at the Latvian National Theatre from 1926 to 1929, and at the Lithuanian State Theatre in Kaunas from 1929 until 1947.

From 1915 Povilas lectured in music schools in Tartu and Riga. From 1927 to 1939 gave concerts in Tartu, Estonia, Riga, Liepaja (Latvia), Kaunas, Klaipeda.

From 1929 to 1933 he lectured at the Kaunas Music School, and from 1933 to 1949 at the Kaunas Conservatory.
