Kira Zvorykina

Kira Alexeyevna Zvorykina was born on 29th October 1919 in Nikolaev. In 1927, she moved to Leningrad. Everyone in her family played chess, there were many tournaments at home. In 1936, Kira won the "family championship". After that, she played at the school team championship for the 34th School from Oktyabrsky district and won all games. Her success was noticed, and Kira was referred to the Palace of Pioneers, where children were taught by NM Petr Romanovsky. Zvorykina began to study chess theory in earnest and soon became one of the Soviet Union's best female players. In 1937, she won the Leningrad Schoolgirls' Championship with a perfect score. In 1946, Zvorykina finished second the Leningrad Women's Championship and won the USSR Women's Championship semi-final; for such a successful performance, she was awarded first category.
