Obituary ъ.

A new heavy loss befell the Moscow '! " chess players: at the end of April in the sanatorium in Tübingen (Germany), Rafail Alexandrovich Falk died at the age of 57 from pneumonia. Rafail Aleksandrovich, who was born in Libau in 1856, lived almost his entire life in Moscow, being a member of the jury and enjoying the well-deserved reputation of an experienced civilist. In the chess world, Rafail Aleksandrovich is known, mainly, as the editor of chess departments in many Moscow '!, newspapers, such as, for example, in "Courier", which has now ceased, in "Early Morning" and especially in the Moscow "Moscow Gazette Deutsche Zeitung), whose employee he was without a doubt during the last 17 years. - His chess departments in the "Moscow German Gazette" have always been distinguished by a lively and varied content and an interesting selection of parties, to which they were greatly comprehended dѣla. Particular interest in his department was given by his correspondent for international chess tournaments, in which he. often visiting abroad, he was willingly personally present, following the maestro's game and sending to his newspaper their live characteristics, which were very popular not only in Russia, but also abroad. —Rafail Aleksandrovich was also a permanent employee of the Chess Board.

We don't know when Raphael Aleksandrovich performed for the first time as a practical player, but already in the eighties! In the years past, he was considered one of the strongest Moscow amateurs, and in 1899 he took part in the 1st All-Russian Tournament in Moscow, however, without much success. In the tour of the Moscow Chess Club, Rafail Alexandrovich invariably participated until the last 8-10 years, when a debilitating chronic illness forced his mail to completely abandon the practical game. In these rounds, he often played with great success: once he took the 1st prize in the big round-handicap with the participation of the best players of the Circle, and in 1901 in the "Moscow championship" he divided the 1st and 2nd prizes A.F. Goncharov (3rd was K.V. Rozenkrants). - His play was distinguished by great thoughtfulness and understanding of the position, and he was a serious opponent for the maestro, with whom he played light partners with great success during their trips abroad. Below we give two of his narrations.

The Moscow Chess Circle lost in the face of Rafail Alexandrovich one of the most zealous and sympathetic members of theirs. His ardent attraction to his favorite game, which did not leave him until the end of his life, lively responsiveness to all the beginnings of the Circle and always warm attitude to young, advancing forces deserved him universal love and deep respect from his members. Unfortunately, over the past years, Rafail Aleksandrovpch was forced out of illness to refuse to participate in the circle of the Circle, but after that he did not forget it, and last year he donated his extensive chess library to the Circle. The memory of Raphael Aleksandrovich will always be inextricably linked to the best years in the life of the Moscow Chess Club.
