Game of the Month (Chess Review, etc.)
Compiled by Phony Benoni
--*--

May 1942 was a seminal issue of <Chess Review>, being the first issue co-edited by enneth Harkness.. An experience magazine editor, Harkness immediately browght a new focus and appearance to the magazine aimed at popularizing the game.

One new feature was <Game of the Month>, written by Reuben Fine. Its introduction stated:. Its introduction stated:

""Each month Grand Master Fine will analyze and discuss a recently-played game consisidered of greatest general interest to Chess Review's readers." (May 1942, p. 107.)

Game 9 March 1942, p. 62.

The feature continued through the in <Chess Life> in (1969-1979) and back to Chess Life (1980-). By that point, under the editorship of Svetozar Gligoric, It had evolved into what was largely a lengthy and detailed and technical analysis of the opening involved in the game. This was not popular among the post-Fischer Boom readers who preferred simpler articles on more basic subjects. Unable to justify the excessive length of the feature (often 5-6 pages), editors began running it sporadically until it disappeared completely after 1981.
