  1. Winstone Chess Challenge Match
Note: This collection has now been superceded by Winstone Chess Challenge Match (1983)

After having his GM title confirmed by FIDE, Murray Chandler returned to his New Zealand homeland to give lectures and simultaneous exhibitions throughout the country. What was originally planned by co-ordinator Brian R Foster as a leisurely visit turned into a three-and-a half week tour with thirteen exhibitions, lectures and live games and culminated with the Winstone Chess Challenge match against perennial New Zealand Champion Ortvin Sarapu . Construction firm Winstone Ltd after being initially contacted by Jon R Stephenson very generously agreed to sponsor the match and also provide the playing venue at their Eden House headquarters in Auckland. The four games were played on the 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th of December 1983 between 12:30pm to 5:30pm. The agreed time control was 40 moves in two hours and then 30 minutes to finish the game. This avoided the necessity for adjournments. Media coverage was provided by the Auckland Star, the New Zealand Womens Weekly and Television New Zealand. Robert Wayne Smith gave up one of his free days to do a segment for the evening television news. Paul Stanley Spiller also gave his time freely to serve as the match arbiter.
