| 13 games, 1909-1923 - Alexander Alekhine Games, 1905-1909
During 1905-1909, Alekhine studied Law at the Imperial High School in Moscow, won the rank of Chess Master, and won the Russian Master title in St. Petersburg, all before the age of 18!

During this time, Alekhine won the title of Grand Master in 1913. His first major chess tournament win was in 1914, in St. Petersburg, when he tied for first with Nimzovich. After that, in the same year, he played in the famous St. Petersburg Tournament. Czar Nicolas II bestowed the title of Grandmaster of Chess to five persons: Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Tarrasch, and Marshall, ranked in that order.

These were the war years, turbulent ones for Russian-born Alekhine. After serving time as a prisoner of war when he was taken at an international tournament in Mannheim in 1914, he was set free a month later. He was a Russian Red Cross worker in Austria until 1916. He went from being an investigator in Moscow to death row inmate in 1919, accused of being a White spy.

From 1920-1921, Alekhine sought work as an actor in Moscow, but the paying jobs of interpreter and Secretary of Education brought him income. His marriage to a foreigner in 1921 got him out of Russia permanently. 1922, London: Finished 2nd behind Capablanca.

1923, Carlsbad: Tied for 1st with Bogoljubov and Maroczy.
1924, New York: Finished 3rd behind Lasker and Capablanca.
1925, Baden-Baden: Finished 1st.
