Nov-19-09  Whack8888: <Billy Vaughan> Haha, that is funny, I was actually going to mention Kramnik as one of the top chess players that seems to have gotten more attractive as he has aged, contrary to what usually happens. He looked pretty goofy back in the day!

HeMateMe: Someone mentioned Moro, and I was trying to think of who he reminds me of...a young Gregory Peck? A ringer for the movie actor (late), was in Guns of Navarone, To Kill a Mockingbird,....Antoeneta Stefanova..=Catharine Deneuve?
Nov-20-09  Raf: have a look at Smyslov these days...

Nov-20-09  KamikazeAttack: Magnus Carlsen is downright ugly.

I shudder to think what he would look like in his 30s/40s.

Nov-20-09  Interbond: Kamik

Many men look better when they mature.
Just think of a young Kramnik with his stupid long hair and big glasses.

Don't forget Mark Taimanov , and old man with a very young and pretty wife :-))

Nov-20-09  Appaz: <<KamikazeAttack> Magnus Carlsen is downright ugly.>

<KA> What's the ugliest, part of <your> body?

Some say your nose.
Some say your toes.

But I think it's YOUR MIND!

Nov-20-09  KamikazeAttack: What is my very ugly mind got to do with the boy's Rhino looks?
Nov-20-09  Bradah: <Travis Bickle: <yoyosd: I love how people pretend Kosteniuk is actually attractive outside of chess playing women. She rates as a 5 if 5 is average. People are clearly attracted to the fact that she plays chess, but if she was standing in a bar I'd be making fun of the friend who took her home that night.> if you don't think Kosteniuk is beautiful then you need a pair of real thick glasses! I bet the girls you pick up in a bar when you have beer goggles make you cry in the morning LOL!!>

LOL

Nov-20-09  Jim Bartle: Hey Appaz: Madge, it's not merely physical!
Nov-20-09  walker: <Appaz> KamikazeAngrep er en débil.
Nov-21-09  metatron2: <Appaz>, there is no need to get angry over nonsense like that. You don't need to be chick to see that Magnus is a fine looking young man.

It looked strange to me that <Kamikaze> put Karjakin among the good looking players, while considering Carslen to be "downright ugly", and so I showed my wife a bunch of pictures of both of them: She said Carlsen looks cute (although a little "nerdy"), and she didn't like Karjakin's look at all, and had a good laugh about Kamikaze' taste..

Nov-21-09  blueofnoon: IMO most men chess players are not so bad, but the problem is they do not pay enough attention to their appearance.

For example, Grischuk could be considered handsome even outside of chess community if he stopped arriving tournaments in t-shirt and jeans, and took care of his hair style.

Same thing can be said about Kramnik, who sometimes look like an investment banker that was unable to sleep last night due to overworks.

In this respect, kudos to Fischer who always arrived tournaments in jacket and tie. He may not have been such a handsome material, but gave good impression because of his wearings.

Nov-21-09  Appaz: <<metatron2> there is no need to get angry over nonsense like that.>

Who is angry? I'm just quoting Frank Zappa :)

When someone have the need to call someone "downright ugly", it usually says more about the offending person than the offended.

My experience is that <respect> counts more than <looks>. People I respect, either their skills or their personality, tend to look good to me.

Carlsen is handsome and his face has character, which certainly reflects his personality.

Nov-21-09  Augalv: I would put Karjakin among the goodlooking players too. But honestly, I don't find Carlsen handsome at all.
Nov-21-09  rogge: Running out of topics? I think what matters most is the size of their shoes.
Nov-21-09  Aspirador: <I think what matters most is the size of their shoes.> Carlsen is definitely an overpronator which means that he needs motion control shoes.

Hey, beer goggles contribute greatly to social networking! I'm just curious about something--guys have an old saying "They all get prettier at midnight!" (desperation to meet someone). Do women have the same feeling...? If you haven't met someoe wearing a $200 pair of shoes by midnight, do you lower standards a bit, go flitting around the bar, advertising availability?

Nov-21-09  Billy Vaughan: <Whack8888> http://nezhmet.files.wordpress.com/...

Now, I don't see how you can look at that face and not conclude that <hippie Kramnik> was a paragon of beauty ;)

HeMateMe: Man, that photo is hot. He must have had to beat the girls off with a stick. Why do you suppose he hasn't been offered an opportunity to endorse cigars? I showed this to a woman in my office, she thinks she saw him in the Pyramid Club.

offramp: The thing about Carlsen is his colossal Hapsburg lip.
Nov-22-09  Rolfo: <Why do you suppose he hasn't been offered an opportunity to endorse cigars?> Clinton may have taught him a trick or two :)
Nov-24-09  janbo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWAi...

I don't agree Magnus is ugly at all, he is still a young man growing up with all the pros and cons that has :-) I feel he generally looks better when he is interviewed in Norwegian (his native language) as he does not stress out so much as he does trying to answer questions in English when he often looks spaced out as he is trying to find the right words.

Of course being a guy I prefer Kosteniuk ;-)) but that is besides the point.

Dec-04-09  SamAtoms1573: The best looking and most fashionable grandmaster is clearly Boris Gelfand:

I agree that Gelfand is the best looking, but the most fashionable has to be Ivanchuk: http://chesspro.ru/_images/material...
