Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-08-06  MUG: An Insanly complicated middlegame!

9...d5!? was very guttsy, but White could have responded 10.Bxd5 with a slight advantage.

Aug-14-07  wardvet: I love this game! Possibly my all-time favorite, though everytime I go over it, I get a headache from all the complications :)
Feb-23-08  wolfmaster: The ending was a perfect example of the importance of the superior minor piece. Silman, in Reassess Your Chess, considers it "the meat of the book", and many amateurs underestimate its importance. After move 32, La Bourdonnais is down a pawn, but the centralized knight on e4 proves to be worth more than a pawn more than White's useless bishop on b2, on the same color as White's center pawns. La Bourdonnais and Philidor are, in my opinion, the first players with a firm knowledge of positional, modern chess.
Jan-07-10  david9000: This is in Staunton's book "The Laws and Practice of Chess" where he comments "how fine is all this! The study of a few such games is almost a liberal chess education."

[MUG, at first I thought 10.Bxd5 could be met with just ...Nxd5 11.exd5 e4 but here it seems McDonnell's Qd2 works (exf3 results in loss of the queen with Re1 as there is no longer a knight to hop to e4)]

Feb-04-12  Knight13: 10. Bxd5 Nxd5 11. exd5 e4 12. Qd2 Qd6 13. Ng5 Qxd5 14. Re1 is bad for Black. But 10...c6 11. Bb3 exd4 12. exd4 Nxd4 13. Re1 Ndf6 14. Ng5 doesn't work for Black either. Therefore, 9...d5 deserves "?!" instead of "!?."
