Sally Simpson: "Steinitz has been known to grieve much when he has lost at chess; at Dundee, for example, in 1866 after his defeat by De Vere (De Vere vs Steinitz, 1867) his friends became alarmed at his woe and disappearance.

Again, after his fall to Rosenthal in a game he should have won at the Criterion in 1883, news were brought that he was on a seat in St. James' Park quite uncontrollable."

Chess History and Reminiscences by Henry Bird. (no page number I read it online https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epu... do a Search for 'Dundee' there is only one mention.)

  Sally Simpson: Hi Stone,

Thanks, I hit upon my link by chance looking for something else and when I decided to post I thought It better to point my reader to a location.

My next step is to visit St James's Park and get the authorities to put a brass plaque on a seat. 'This may have been where Steinitz was quite uncontrollable after his loss to Rosenthal in 1883.'
