Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-24-05  Whitehat1963: Excellent endgame technique from Old Man Chigorin against Marshall in his prime.
Jul-24-05  paladin at large: Not a good outing for Marshall, for sure. In the middle game, he goes from one pawn down, with no apparent positional compensation, leads to simplification - and goes two pawns down. Chigorin maneuvers well and avoids Marshall's attempts to find a perpetual check.
Aug-23-05  Whitehat1963: A long and instructive game, Marshall's only loss using the Opening of the Day.
Oct-13-06  Hincho: A wonderful demonstration of end game technique and how important it is to develop pawns slowly and securely.
Oct-13-06  Somer: The position after move 69 is in Averbakhs "Chess Endings: Essental Knowledge"

Phony Benoni: Marshall scored 3/4 playing the King's Gambit with White at Carlsbad, but defending it as Black against Chigorin was probably an act of hubris. Or maybe he was just humoring the old man? In either case, it didn't work.

The game seems to have a lumbering effect so common in games from the late 1800s. 37.c5 is a nice touch, splintering Black's queenside and cutting his queen off from some active squares. Naturally Chigorin plays the knight ending well, and naturally Marshall finds a stalemate trap.
