Oct-30-07 | | RandomVisitor: 24...h6 seems to stop white's attack.
<al wazir>I agree, 32.Rac1 is the best plan, simplifying and solidifying the win. |
Oct-30-07 | | DrGridlock: After black's 32'nd move, the knight has been saved and White has a pretty solid advantage (+2.19 according to Fritz). White's next 2 moves (f3 and Rf1) gives balck first a pawn, and then the exchange. Black has come back to +1.25 according to Fritz. Now it's black's turn for inaccurate play, and by move 44, White has a rook and 5 pawns vs a rook. By move 58, black has whittled that down to a rook and 2 pawns vs a rook, and by move 80, it's the same 2 pawns, each of which have advanced 1 square. The puzzle is in moves 25 through 31, and cover your eyes for the rest of the game. |
Oct-30-07 | | beenthere240: I thought 33. f3 followed by 34. Rf1 was pretty good, since it led to white getting a rook on the 7th rank and a simplification into what should have been an easy endgame. |
Oct-30-07 | | micartouse: Wow, this wasn't so easy. It's not too hard to find the idea of Qxh7+ and the knight-fork. That's true. But it's a very complex position otherwise. I fell for playing 25. Bxg6? first because I couldn't find a clean followup to 25. Qxh7+ Kf8. A very nice exercise (I like these tricky ones with many variations). |
Oct-30-07 | | Alphastar: White to play, Easy difficulty. We are down a piece for a pawn, though we can immediately gain the exchange back with Nxe8+.
However, that's not what we're looking for. If we could remove the defender of the e8-rook, the h8-rook, we would pick up a rook and a queen (Nxe8+ followed by Nxc7).
Hence: 25. Qxh7+! In case of 25. ..Rxh7, 26. Nxe8+ Kf8 27. Nxc7 easily wins.
The only thing we have to check here is that the combination does not fail after 25. ..Kf8!? It doesn't, we have 26. Nxe8! Kxe8 27. Qg7 saving our queen, while we are threatening 28. Bxg6 removing the defender of the h8-rook; If Rf8, Bxg6 fxg6 Qxc7 picks up black's queen.
That's the solution I think. |

Oct-30-07 | | YouRang: I spotted the knight fork potential right away, and so 25. Qxh7+ was easy to see, since the queen is immune (25...Rxh7 26. Nxe8+ getting the queen back and scooping up a rook along the way). The trickier part was seeing what to do if 25...Kf8. At first glance, it looked like my queen might be trapped. Funny that it took me a while to see that 25...Nxe8 still does the job of picking up a rook and keeping me out of trouble -- one way or another, either we swap queens or my queen finds refuge on g7. Good puzzle. |
Oct-30-07 | | kevin86: To answer this one correct,do I have to get all 55 moves right? lol Actually,I saw 25 ♕xh7+ but I feared that the queen would be trapped after ...♔f8. White did follow up with ♘xe8 anyway-attacking the queen and gaining the exchange. |

 | | Jimfromprovidence: Last week I became enamored with the rook lift concept. I tried it with today’s puzzle and the line that develops looks pretty strong. I played 25 Nxe8+ Rxe8 then 26 Ra3?! (threatening Rh3 then Qh6+,etc.) 26… Rh8 27 Rh3 Qe5 28 Qh6+ Kg8 29 exf7+ Kxf7 30 Bxg6+ hxg6 31 Qxh8 Qxh8 32 Rxh8 bxa4 and white gains two rooks for a bishop and knight. click for larger viewI'd appreciate any critique or comments on this variation, if there are any. |

Can't black simply play 26...bxa3? You may have black moving up the board by mistake. I also spent a great deal of time trying to make a rook lift work, but on each occasion, the rook was immediately snapped off of the board by one of the black pawns. |
Oct-30-07 | | patzer2: For today's puzzle solution, White wins with the threat of a decisive Knight Fork after 25. Qxh7+ Kxh7 26. Nxe8+ or the game continuation.White's nifty looking demolition of pawn structure tactic with 21. Bxg7!? is apparently refuted by 24...h6, as noted by <Random Visitor>. |

 | | al wazir: <KingG: If 19...gxf6 20. Bxh7+ Kxh7>, then 21. Qh5+ Kg8 22. Qg4+ Kh7 23. Nh5 Rg8 24. Qh4 Rg6 25. Nxf6+ Kg7 26. Qh7+ Kf8 27. Qh8+ Rg8 28. Qxg8+ Ke7 29. Qxe8#. But if instead black plays 24...Kg6!, I don't see how white can win. |

Oct-30-07 | | pawnofdoom: Great tactic. Didn't see it. I saw Qxh7 and Nxh7 but couldn't get a winning line out of either. This sacrifice really didn't win the game, though. All it did was regain material, but bring a positional advantage good enough for white to pull off a win. |
Oct-30-07 | | gmgomes: My engine indicates that game was pretty even until black played 24... Rh8 (h6 was the move).
25. Qxh7 was found instantly with evaluations around +4.
The suggested line is 25.Qxh7+ Rxh7 26.Nxe8+ Kf8 27.Nxc7 Rg7 28.g3 Nf4 29.Kf1 f6 30.gxf4 Rxc7 31.exf6 Rf7 32.f5 b3 33.Bb1 Rxf6 34.fxe6 Rxe6 |

Oct-30-07 | | newton296: that was A great attacking game by kostic. He goes after the g pawn ( kinda rare) and just keeps landing blows. I bet wolf was thinking after Bxg7!? "what the is going on here" then kostic follows all the kingside blows with a a great endgame to boot. loved playing through the entire game
wow! |
Oct-30-07 | | chessmoron: No one can solve my puzzle. :-( |
Oct-30-07 | | TheaN: Waah! Tuesday failure! I went with the seemingly comforting 25.Bxg6 to regain the piece and allow a fatal tactic, but 25....fxg6 26.Qxh7+? Rxh7 27.Nxe8+ Kf8 28.Nxc7 Rxc7 and White has some defending to do against two pieces for a Rook. With the idea of d5 White can safe his exchange up in the immediate sac, but I got stumped by 25....Kf8 and went for 25.Bxg6. |
Oct-30-07 | | BipolarChessorder: I can't believe white should need another 32 moves to force resignation after being three pawns up by move 48 (or having a huge advantage even earlier). He could probably have won even by giving up his rook for black's lone pawn given that he has pairs of connected passed pawns on both sides of the board! |
Jan-09-09 | | WhiteRook48: amazing. However he was 2 pawns up anyway so there wasn't much Wolf could do. |
Nov-16-09 | | psmith: As pointed out above, 24...h6 equalizes at least. Also, I don't see a win for White after 19...gxf6. The best seems to be a perpetual beginning 20. Bxh7+. There just aren't enough White attacking pieces. |
