Then I had to convince myself it was still a win after the simple 25. ... Kf8--which takes away the fork and leaves the White Queen trapped. Then I thought that removing the Knight first with 25. Bxg6 was right, only to convince myself it wasn't. <MostlyAverageJoe> has a point. This does not lead to a crushing advantage for White when the combination ends on move 27. Although he is up by the exchange and 2 Pawns, his Knight on c7 is not a strength, because it's trapped and needs attention. |

White's next 2 moves (f3 and Rf1) gives balck first a pawn, and then the exchange. Black has come back to +1.25 according to Fritz. Now it's black's turn for inaccurate play, and by move 44, White has a rook and 5 pawns vs a rook. By move 58, black has whittled that down to a rook and 2 pawns vs a rook, and by move 80, it's the same 2 pawns, each of which have advanced 1 square. The puzzle is in moves 25 through 31, and cover your eyes for the rest of the game. |

Bxg6? first because I couldn't find a clean followup to 25. Qxh7+ Kf8. A very nice exercise (I like these tricky ones with many variations). |

However, that's not what we're looking for. If we could remove the defender of the e8-rook, the h8-rook, we would pick up a rook and a queen (Nxe8+ followed by Nxc7).
Hence: 25. Qxh7+! In case of 25. ..Rxh7, 26. Nxe8+ Kf8 27. Nxc7 easily wins.
The only thing we have to check here is that the combination does not fail after 25. ..Kf8!? It doesn't, we have 26. Nxe8! Kxe8 27. Qg7 saving our queen, while we are threatening 28. Bxg6 removing the defender of the h8-rook; If Rf8, Bxg6 fxg6 Qxc7 picks up black's queen.
That's the solution I think. |

| Oct-30-07 | | YouRang: I spotted the knight fork potential right away, and so 25. Qxh7+ was easy to see, since the queen is immune (25...Rxh7 26. Nxe8+ getting the queen back and scooping up a rook along the way). The trickier part was seeing what to do if 25...Kf8. At first glance, it looked like my queen might be trapped. Funny that it took me a while to see that 25...Nxe8 still does the job of picking up a rook and keeping me out of trouble -- one way or another, either we swap queens or my queen finds refuge on g7. Good puzzle. |

Can't black simply play 26...bxa3? You may have black moving up the board by mistake. I also spent a great deal of time trying to make a rook lift work, but on each occasion, the rook was immediately snapped off of the board by one of the black pawns. |

| Oct-30-07 | | pawnofdoom: Great tactic. Didn't see it. I saw Qxh7 and Nxh7 but couldn't get a winning line out of either. This sacrifice really didn't win the game, though. All it did was regain material, but bring a positional advantage good enough for white to pull off a win. |

"what the is going on here" then kostic follows all the kingside blows with a a great endgame to boot. loved playing through the entire game
