 | | Sneaky: 27. ...Qc6 would win too: 28. Rc1 Rc8 and Black is up a piece; as with 28. d5 Rd8 |
Dec-08-03 | | grandeurdon: Sneaky,does 27.Re1 go?.
I mean 27...Re1.This forces an exchange of rooks and a subsequent win.
27...Re1 28.Rxe1 Bxe1 And perpetual can be prevented with Qf3+.
I suppose this is good. |

Mar-25-04 | | Taidanii: How old is Bobby in this one? |
Mar-26-04
 | | paulalbert: Bobby born in March 1943 so 16 years old here. Paul Albert |
Mar-26-04
 | | paulalbert: Maybe not quite 16 if that is March 10 not October 3rd. Paul Albert |
Mar-26-04
 | | paulalbert: No 16 either way since birthday is March 9, 1943. Should have researched exact date before posting. Trying to do things too quickly this evening. Paul Albert |
Jul-29-04 | | Knight13: Bobby played this game well. Good game. |
Jan-28-05 | | weirdoid: <apple head> actually, IIRC in "My 60", game 14 is Keres vs Fischer, 1959 - I used to have the book. |
Jan-28-05 | | ughaibu: This was one of those games that Keres threw to The Fish as a hint that he was an Estonian nationalist. |
Jan-28-05 | | WMD: Bobby was an Estonian nationalist? |
Jan-28-05 | | ughaibu: kono tabi wa ne. . . doumo. |
Jan-28-05 | | WMD: That's Japanese for what? |
Jan-28-05 | | ughaibu: It's situational but "kono tabi" is usually used as "condolences" on a death, however it can also be used as congratulations on a birth, or whatever, depending on how it's followed up, literally it just means "on this occassion". "Doumo", likewise is quite euphemistic. The thrust of "kono tabi wa ne. . . doumo" on this occassion (kono toki) is something like "well, you got me this time but. . . . thanks anyway". |
Jun-21-05 | | notyetagm: What in the world was Keres thinking when he played like a pawn-grabbing amateur in the opening? <Get your king stuck in the middle and go down in 27 moves.> |
Jun-21-05 | | ttr2121: Yeah, that theory on throwing the game sure holds a lot of water. My word, the things people will say... |
Jun-21-05 | | RookFile: Fischer was the one who usually took
a pawn and hung on. Maybe Keres figured young Fischer wouldn't know
how to play the other side in this
situation. Don't be too hard on him,
if you set aside the blunder in this game, he essentially played Fischer even in his career. Not many can say that. |
Aug-28-05 | | BobbyBishop: How unnerving must it have been for players of this stature..Keres..Reshevsky..Smyslov to lose to this 16 year old kid. Maybe kinda like I did when I lost 2 games to Irina Crush...when she was 8! I was about 24 playing at the Marshall Chess Club under 1600's as she was. And people were watching us play..or watching me lose..it was a little uncomfortable..lol..before the game she's running around the club with barbie dolls then she's mating me like a fish..very bizarre! |
Aug-28-05 | | 50 Quatloos Newcomer: < BobbyBishop > Maybe you can beat her now! Looks like shes peaked at around 2500. |
Aug-28-05 | | 50 Quatloos Newcomer: Seems Keres might have had a chance if he had kept the long diagnona. Once the Bishop leaves the diagonal, adios. I think Fish was 15 in this tournament. there is a beautiful game against Keres from the candidates tournament, I think a Sicilian dragon where, Fish as black checkmates Keres on the Queenside, when he himself is one move away from being mated, in Bobby's 60 memorable games book. |
Aug-28-05 | | ArturoRivera: 17.-0-0 seems fine for white |
Aug-28-05 | | Kangaroo: <<ArturoRivera>: 17.-0-0 seems fine for white> <17. 0-0 (?) Bxd4. 18. exd4 Rxe2>
OR
<18. Qxd4 Qxd4 19. exd4 Rxe2> - Black wins a Bishop. |
Aug-28-05 | | RookFile: My guess is: Keres noticed Fischer was used to winning games with black by taking material and holding onto it. So, as we saw in this game, the
plan with 7. Bxb8 to win a pawn isn't that terrific for White, but Keres must have figured Fischer wouldn't be able to approach the pawn down situation with black. Bobby proved otherwise, of course. |
Sep-03-05 | | ArturoRivera: then it could be G3 with the intention of Bf1 to g2 or it is too slow? |
Oct-04-05
 | | wwall: Perhaps best is 24.Bf3. If 24...Re1+ 25.Rxe1 Bxe1 26.Kxe1 f5 27.Qf4 (not 27.Qh3 Rc1+ 28.Bd1 Qc2) 27...Qb1+ 28.Bd1 (not 28.Kd2 Rc2+ 29.Ke3 Qb3 mate) 28...Re8+ 29.Kf1 (29.Kd2 Qb4+ 30.Kd3 Qb5+ 31.Kd2 Qb4+ draw) Qxd1+ 30.Kg2 Qb3 31.Qf3 and White looks OK. If 24...Bd2 25.h3 Rcd8 26.d5 should be OK. If 24...Rcd8 or 24...Red8, then 25.Kg2. After 24...Qd5, Black threatens 25...Qxh1+ and 25...Qxb5. After 27...Be1, Black threatens 28...Qf1+ 29.Kc2 Qc4+ 30.Kb1 Rb8+ 31.Ka3 Bc3 mate. |
Jun-24-06 | | notyetagm: Wow, what a massacre by Bobby. Hard to believe that one of the world's very best players (Keres) could be beaten so easily by a 16-year old. |
