offramp: Alekhine could have won this game with a smart temporizing move. Here is the position.

In the game, Alekhine played the direct move: 52...g6 53. fxg6 f5 54. g7! and Alekhine played 54...Bf7=. He could have played 54...Rd8=. Either way, the white ♗ goes to the queenside, out of the way of those kingside pawns.

But in this position,

Black could have played 52...Rd8! That puts White in Zugzwang. Black would win.
