Feb-03-04  vishya: what about severe time trouble?!
Feb-03-04  Benjamin Lau: Good point, it's a blitz game after all, although it's still pretty funny.
Feb-03-04  Shad0wl0rd16: i still laugh at this
Jun-08-04  MoonlitKnight: I think he did it on purpose. :)
Feb-07-09  Benzol: Although this was a rapid game it's incredible that Ivanchuk who according to British GM David Norwood had about fifty seconds left on his clock was unable to find 29...♕xh1 mate. It's nice to know that even GMs are human.

:)

May-24-09  ozmikey: I remember Danny King and Maurice Ashley commenting live on this game, they were going nuts after Vishy's 29th move. "Why can't he just take the rook in the corner?" "Isn't that mate?" and finally Ashley: "He doesn't see it! He doesn't see it! THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE!!"

Great entertainment. :-)

Eggman: The original broadcast of this game, with GMs Ashley and King providing phony-sounding, comically melodramatic colour-commentary, has been uploaded to YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ix6...

perfidious: Ashley and King covered this event too?

I was present (in body at least)during the semi-final and final in the New York event, with King providing his commentary and Ashley simply saying, 'indeed' as a rejoinder to most every remark in reply.

Jun-16-11  BobCrisp: I saw this game live, but have never seen the video. Aside from the obvious, the quality of <Ivanchuk>'s play in this game was incredibly high. Still hard to believe that he missed the mate. He had a Queen and bishop on the same diagonal - how could you not look for it?

A highlights' package of each Intel event was shown by <ESPN> (which accounted for the double-act presence of <King & Ashley>), and I saw a couple on <Channel4>. I think they also appeared for sale by <GMVideo>.

Jun-17-11  IRONCASTLEVINAY: I saw the video today mind blowing comentry, mind blowing sacs, mind blowing tension. Now please somebody blow chucky.
Jun-17-11  IRONCASTLEVINAY: queen takes rook thats gonna be it, suerly is.
Why cant he just take the rook in the corner???? c,mon c,mon c,mon queen takes rook mate. Its unbelievable queen takes rook mate, are we missing something?? OH! He missed it UNBELIEVABLE !!!!!

That is astonishing that a GM of ivanchuk caliber missed that. OH!!! and he is under time pressure

Check It Out: Okay, that was a cool video. Thanks, <Eggman>
Jun-17-11  SMCB1997: I think he was just under a huge amount of pressure.

How's that?

FSR: Unbelievable is right. If Ivanchuk didn't like 29...Qxh1# for some reason, 29...Qg2+ 30.Ke1 Qxh1# wasn't half bad.
Dec-08-12  mikealando: It's a life-lesson. We all overthink unnecessarily from time to time even in normal life matters and thus make many blunders
Dec-16-12  whiteshark: Don't analyse blitz games....
Dec-25-12  King.Arthur.Brazil: The logical explanation is that IVANCHUK was pressioned for any means (organizers, FIDE) to make ANAND to win. So, he showed everyone that he could win, but didn't because somebody told him not to do it. Seemed things of $$$ and promoters. There were 2 mats at 29 move, and why didn't ANAND resined?
Sep-18-13  Drakulo: If you would allow me to analyze blitz, 26. Rc3 (-1.14) should have been played instead of 26. Kd1 (-#6). Anyhow, Ivanchuk missed the fatal move.
Apr-19-14  tranquilsimplicity: I saw the missed mate in one immediately. Wow..even Masters are human.#
May-05-14  gabriel112000: Of course they're human. What do you think they are?
May-12-14  tranquilsimplicity: Intelligent people have a way of communicating with expressions that should not be taken literally. Unfortunately those of lower intellect cannot appreciate the use of language in its many modes and forms and without understanding the nuances of language are quick to display their stupidity and ignorance by using sarcasm and insults. #
Jan-17-15  1 2 3 4: <tranquilsimplicity> another pseudo-intellectual detected lol
May-30-15  Compound Error: Why can't there be more chess shown on freeview digital tv? I don't know, but would think it should only cost a fraction of their budget to produce a decent quality weekly show on just one of the hundred channels. They can do it even with shaky hands cameramen if they like, adverts every five minutes, and constant recaps of what you've already seen previous to the ad break. Viewers could vote, not on chess players' ability, but how popular they are whilst couped up in a house for two months etc...
Jul-11-16  garland: 22... Ba3 23. bxa3 Rac8 would have worked
