Jul-07-05  IDestroyChess: Why not 27.Rxf7+ and hxg4 with simple win?

  OBIT: Yes, not to mention 27. Nxg4 also wins a piece. There must be something wrong on the score sheet. I'm guessing White played 18. Nc5 rather than 18. Ne5. The knight bounced from d3 to e5 or c5 a few times this game.

Amusing finish, regardless. White resigns with Black on move, not waiting for 56...h2+ 57. Kxh2 Rh7+ 58. Kg1 Rh1mate.

3. = (0.03): 27.Rf4 Nxe5 28.dxe5 Bb5

yes <IDestroyChess> <OBIT>..obviously 27.Rxf7, maybe Wemmers was afraid to win over the eccentric Blackburne.. :-)

  jnpope: 18.Ne5 is wrong. White played 18.Nc5 according to the score published in the Baltimore American, 1881.10.16:

Feb-02-13  JimNorCal: Makes sense, otherwise 27. Nxg4 wins a piece.
