Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-23-02  ughaibu: Blackburne plays another ridiculous blindfold game, part of a simul! Instead of 22..Qf6 how abot Na5 or even Qe8?
Nov-23-02  pawntificator: It's impressive nonetheless.
Nov-23-02  Bears092: 22... Qxd8 23. Nd6+ drops the queen.
Nov-23-02  ughaibu: But at least he gets a rook for it, at f6 it goes for nothing. However Qe8 23. Nd6, Kc7 24. Ne8 followed by Qf7 gaining time by the attack on the bishop then h5 and the h-pawn will win more material. My other suggestion of Na5 also looks meaningless after the reply Qf7 black's queen still has nowhere to go. I guess 22. resigns would have been best.
Mar-21-14  estrick:

On White's 26th move he eschewed taking Black's queen, and took the knight on b4 instead, while announcing mate in six moves.

27. Qd5+ Kc7
28. Qxc5+ Qc6
29. Nd5+ Kb8
30. Rxc8+ Qxc8
31. Qd6+ Qc7
32. Qxc7#

Mar-21-14  estrick: Blackburne's 9th move is actually a mistake, as demonstrated in this game, where Black has the resource 10. ...h5!

Hebden vs M Stean, 1982

.

Blackburne also played 9. Bg5 in a 21 game simultaneous exhibition eight years earlier, which led to a quicker mate than in this game, thanks to Black's poor defense.

Blackburne vs Wilson, 1880

Blackburne was apparently quite pleased with both of these games, as evidenced by his inclusion of them in his volume of Selected Games. In his comments about the game with Wilson, Blackburne notes, "...the opening of this game bears a curious resemblance to the well-known game of mine with Mr. Burt." In his annotations he states that 10. ...f6 is Black's best defense.

.

Morphy played 9. Qe2 against Anderssen in 1858, but Blackburne was either unfamiliar with that game, or believed that 9. Bg5 led to a more decisive win, not being aware of Black's resource on the 10th move.
