Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-03-15  asianwarrior: Noce game but seemed to be unnoticed by kibitzers.
Jan-03-15  iking: such a wonderful demolition ...
Jan-03-15  iking: 27. e4! this move means CARNAGE!
Jan-03-15  kamagong24: great game indeed!
Jan-03-15  geniokov: This game was an example in a "Reshevsky Variation" in the book "How to Play Nimzo-indian Defense" Very nice game indeed!
Jan-03-15  kamagong24: there should be a pun for this game...
Jan-11-15  spawn2: Am I imagining things or does this game looks somewhat similar to the recent Carlsen - So game (at least the opening?) I remember Wesley So g4 thrust is one of the ideas for White in this position.

woldsmandriffield: Memories of the days of Sussex living when Hastings had GM all-play-all tournaments. Torre couldn't catch Andersson in the last round (who finished with a 13-move draw). Nevertheless, he played a very attacking game.

31 Qd3 would have won out of hand because 31..Bg8 32 Qg6 is crushing.

32 Bxd5 also leads to carnage after 32..cxd5 33 Rxh7+ Kxh7 34 Rxg5 Rf7 35 Qh5

Peters gave Torre two opportunities to find the killing blow Rxh7 on moves 33 and 35. While the situation is bad, Black has some survival changes with 32.. or 34..Nxf6.

Feb-26-19  Inocencio: Torre is the Asia's first grandmaster. Although, he did not become World Champion, nevertheless, he inspired many Asians like Anand, So etc.
Aug-21-20  DonPepe: This game earned the Brilliancy Award of the tourney.
Nov-12-23  Brenin: 35 Rxh7+ Kxh7 36 Rxg5 hxg5 37 Bxd5, threatening 38 Qh5, looks like a quicker kill.
Nov-12-23  EasilyConfused: That is a great attack. But can black decline the second rook and instead 36..Rg8?
Nov-12-23  mel gibson: I saw that but I had no idea if it would work or not.

Stockfish 16 says mate in 23:

35. Rxh7+

(35. Rxh7+ (Re7xh7+ Kh8xh7 Rg1xg5 h6xg5 Bf3xd5 Qd8xf6 e5xf6 Kh7-g6 Qd1-d3+ Kg6xf6 Qd3-f1+ Kf6-e7 Qf1-f7+ Ke7-d6 Nc3-e4+ Re8xe4 Bd5xe4 Ra8-h8+ Be4-h7 Rh8xh7+ Qf7xh7 c6-c5 d4xc5+ Kd6xc5 Qh7xb7 Kc5-d6 Qb7-b6+ Kd6-e5 Qb6xa5+ Ke5-e4 Qa5xg5 Ke4-d4 a4-a5 Kd4-c3 Qg5-c5+ Kc3xb3 a5-a6 Kb3-b2 a6-a7 Kb2-b1 a7-a8Q Kb1-b2 Qa8-b8+ Kb2-a1 Qc5-a3+) +M23/79 1714)

White wins_ mate in 23.

Nov-12-23  Cecco: <EasilyConfused>: According to the engine, 36. ... hxg5 is a little less bad than 36. ... Tg8. <Brenin: 35 Rxh7+ Kxh7 36 Rxg5 hxg5 37 Bxd5, threatening 38 Qh5, looks like a quicker kill.> Yes, and as previously noted, 31. Rxf7 is less effective than 31. Qd3 and 32. Re7 risks not winning. All understandable, on the board and with the clock ticking, but the brilliance of the game can be questioned a bit.
Nov-12-23  Lloyd Gross: I went with 35 Rxh7+ Kxh7 36 Rxg5 hxg5 37 Qd3+ Kg8 38 Qg6+ Kf8 39 Qg7#
Nov-12-23  Mayankk: I saw 35 Rxh7+ Kxh7 36 Rxg5 hcg5 37 Be4+ dxe4 (3 consecutive sacs! ) 38 Qh5+ Kg8 39 Kg6+ Kh8/f8 40 Qg7#.

Black doesn't have to accept the Bishop sac and 37 ... Kg8 may extend the game by a bit but 38 Qh5 still seems a handful for Black.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Saw the first few moves of the same Stockfish 16 line that <mel gibson> saw, but not Black's despair Queen sacrifice. Still claiming credit; IRL, a human would not play that.

Nov-12-23  AlicesKnight: I saw the <Mayankk> line (to my surprise). If Black declines the third sac (Bishop) and gets ...Qc7/d7 in at some point, does this help or will White skewer the Q by checking the K on the 7th rank?
