Benzol: The majority of games in Round 11 were played on the 6th of May but this game was played earlier on a free day, the 4th of May.
Aug-21-06  Calli: <Benzol> I don't have the main Tournament book to confirm, but have a little compilation book of the newspaper annotations, almost all British. I checked to see if they say anything, but they don't give dates at all. However, here is what they say about Gunsburg:

"With regard to Mr. Gunsburg, his almost entire lack of form must in no small measure be due to his retirement from first-class pactise during the last few years. Further he was adversely affect by his environment-comprehensible to all chess-players when is remembered that he is not a smoker."

Excuses, excuses! Still, picture a room where, say, three fourths of the players are puffing on big cigars and releasing clouds of smoke. Ah, the good old days....

An Englishman: Good Evening: 15.Qc2 is a clever, even humorous little trap.
Aug-22-06  Albertan: On move 16 Gunsberg could have played 16...c5 and play might have continued: 17.Nxd5!? Bxd5 18.Bxd5 Qxd5 19.Rxe4 c4 20.Bd2 Nd3 and Black has compensation for the pawn.

On move 17 Gunsberg should have played 17...f4 and play might have continued: 18.Nxd5!? Nxd5 19.Qxe4 c6 20.a4 bxa4 21.Rxa4 Rb8 22.Qc2 Rb6

Aug-22-06  Albertan: On move 18 Gunsberg could have played 18...Bh4 and play might have continued:

19. g3 Ng5 20.Nxh4 Nxd4 21. Bxd5 Bxd5 22. Nxd5 Ngf3+ 23. Nxf3 Nxf3+ 24. Kf1 Nxe1. However after 25.e6 c6 26.e7 Qxd5 27.Qxd5+ cxd5 28.exf8(Q) Kxf8 29.Kxe1 white is winning.

Aug-22-06  Albertan: I wonder why Lasker did not play the move 24.Nxc7 ?
Aug-22-06  calmarten: <Albertan> the N can't take the rook after 24.Nxc7 Qh5 25.Nxa8 Qxd1# my guess is that the positoin would be the same after 24.Nxc7 Qh5 25. Be3 Qe2 might be uncomfortble so no the N on d5 defends the B untill the queen can defend the second rank with b4
Aug-22-06  Albertan: Hi calmarten. After 24.Nxc7 Qh5 White can stop the mate by playing 25.Bd2.And if 25...Rac8 then 26.Ne6 Rfe8 27.d5 is winning for White.
Aug-22-06  calmarten: <Albertan> well I think in that case 24. Nxc7 Qh5 25.Bd2 Nxd4! with the idea of 26.Nxa8 Qd2 27. hmmm I'm not sure if white has a good move looks like Nf3 leads to a perp in most of the lines here or 27 Kh1 works maybe 25 Nf3 is a perp in that line nope I can't fine anything there either maybe all the lines lose for black

Honza Cervenka: 16....f5 was a mistake. It was better to play 16....c5 with idea 17.a3 c4.
