Dec-13-05 | | EnglishOpeningc4: Wonderful endgame play

Aug-28-15 | | kamagong24: like Alekhine... |
Sep-11-15 | | SimplicityRichard: Kasparov adopts a Capablanca-like philosophy ie. playing the opening and middlegame with the endgame in mind. Simple and elegant!# |
Sep-11-15 | | Paarhufer: Pretty boring. |
Sep-11-15 | | nalinw: At age 13! |
Sep-11-15 | | Abdel Irada: People often find "boring" what they do not understand. ∞ |
Sep-11-15 | | bengalcat47: I have to disagree with Paarhufer's remark about the game being boring. This is an impressive endgame win for Kasparov. Many of the great masters have produced wins not with flashy and wild mating attacks but rather precise endgame play! |
Sep-11-15 | | pedro99: Sorry but I agree with Paarhufer. But for the historical interest in Kasparov as a teenager it is low quality chess. The opening was weak. If your opponent riddles himself with weak pawns you don't need to sac pieces. K showed good control in the endgame though. |
Sep-11-15 | | morfishine: A complete waste of time |
Sep-11-15 | | Paarhufer: <Abdel Irada: People often find "boring" what they do not understand.>
Very charming!
But you are possibly right! There could have been interesting moments, if the Black player would have tried to fight, say 22.. ♖d5!. click for larger viewThe rook ending after 23.bxc6 ♖xc5 is surely drawn, and 23.♖c1 ♘d4 wins the b-pawn. So, White can try 23.♘xe6 ♖xb5, but this is probably hard to win, because the a-pawn looks very weak. |

 | | Fusilli: I agree with <Paarhufer> that after 22...Rd5 it looks quite drawish. And I don't really find the endgame particularly instructive or exemplary. All in all, this is one more example of a regular game that made it to GOTD solely because the name of one of the players lends itself to word play. Whoever proposed the pun probably found the player Andre Galle and looked for his most famous rival--it was a no brainer. There is even no reason why this pun should be for a Galle loss as opposed to a win. This pun thing has to go. It makes a few people have some fun while the rest of us look at a game that is often a shot in the dark as far as quality goes. (Most of the time I don't even bother.) |
Sep-11-15 | | kevin86: White's outside passed pawn cooks black. |
Sep-11-15 | | morfishine: <Fusilli> Of course, you are absolutely right...but you are too good for this...They just don't listen to suggestions ***** |
Sep-11-15 | | The Kings Domain: Amusing pun, but a bit on the icky side. :-)
Fine game by the youthful Kasparov. The fire isn't there yet, but the ability to spot the advantage and make use of it is in place. |
Sep-11-15 | | Dr. Overlord: Outrageous pun. The blatant sexism is offending politically correct, sensitive souls everywhere. I waited for <morphinist> to blow the whistle, but he's getting soft. I had to step up and do it. |
Sep-11-15 | | dark.horse: When I first heard about remoter passed pawns, I wondered what pawns had to do with motors. |
Sep-11-15 | | rickycota: Game of the day? Really? Very simple, Kasparov wins a pawn, exchanges everything, gets a passed pawn on the A file against pawns on the other side of the board and that´s it. It´s a nice game, but not game of the day quality. There´s a lot more interesting games. |
Sep-12-15 | | Dr. Overlord: <rickycoyota: It´s a nice game, but not game of the day quality. There´s a lot more interesting games.> Yes, indeed. How that nice mr. Freeman fellow had the Galle to put this game up as GOTD is beyond me. |
Sep-12-15 | | TheFocus: Any talented teen could have played this game.
Not really impressive. |
Sep-12-15
 | | Fusilli: <rickycota: ... It´s a nice game, but not game of the day quality.> There is no requirement that the GOTD is of good quality. All that is needed is to produce a pun, 90% of the time based on the last name of one of the players. I suspect whoever proposed the pun didn't even look at the game. That's why the pun thing needs to go. |

 | | Sally Simpson: It's one for the coaches looking for an example of the strength of an outside passer, the ability to visualise and trade down to a simple win. from here....

click for larger viewI'd have no qualms about using this in a beginners primer. Game of the day?
If it helps drive home some lesson a pupil will never forget then it's perfect for a one in 365 slot. Puns:
