Dec-09-02 | | mdorothy: Wow, Morphy lost. And what a beautiful mate it was. I don't think I will ever get over how much I like smothering mate. Good job to Mcconnell of taking very nice advanced supports for his knights and tearing Morphy's position apart. |
Dec-10-02 | | drukenknight: Not only that but who doesnt like the Kings gambit. DOes white dare to try 8 Bxf7? it looks sound enuf for a Morphy to try. |
Dec-10-02 | | ughaibu: If I remember correctly McConnell was the local champion and Morphy was 12 years old when they played. Morphy won the match. |
Dec-10-02 | | mdorothy: I don't like the prospects of 8 Bxf7. I just dont think there is enough attacking possibilities with that few developed pieces. It could work, and im definatly not saying morphy couldnt do it. If anybody could, he could.. but I dont think it would get the job done, and i dont like the long term benefits and losses. Itd be good for the shocking possibilites, only good once. |

Dec-11-02
 | | Sneaky: Amazing that Morphy let himself get mated when 21.Rxf2 would have saved the game. Well, even Morphy had to learn how to play. |

Sep-02-03
 | | chessgames.com: <was morphy white or black?> Evidence suggests Morphy was Black and won this game. ughaibu and PMKnight may want to update their game collections in that respect. |
Sep-02-03 | | ughaibu: Chessgames.com: thanks. |
Dec-14-03 | | jakecoul: Morphy was definitely Black in this game. He mated McConnel. It was a beautiful mate. |
Dec-15-03 | | jhang: Sometimes lossing a Queen makes us desperate but on this game it was a surprise, ending on a magnificient mate.I saw this game but in other variation which was I think Bb6 and Qc5, but the same mate. |
Dec-16-03 | | Catfriend: I don't understand why u consider it such a great mate.. this pattern is so overboring already...
Besides, here it was so easy for white to save himself.......... |
Mar-25-04 | | ArturoRivera: This was a bane smothered, what i really admire about morphy, anderssen and all the other chess players, is their ability to take such great risk of using kings gambit, evans gambit, so risk positions for both.
unfortunatley their love for sacrifices and atack (overwhelmed by Mikjail tal) would stock on wall against efective defenses and positional play dont you think friends? |
Jul-14-04 | | white pawn: What was the point of 16.C4? That seems to be the beginning of the end, for White. |
Dec-01-05 | | Chopin: The good old smothered mate. Great game! |
Dec-15-05 | | Antipholous: <white_pawn> What was the point of 16. C4? That seems to be the beginning of the end, for White. Yeah...he was trying to remove the guard at d5...don't think he thought about the bishop taking his undefended pawn though. I saw that and cringed. And when rook refused to take the knight check at f2...white wasn't playing well at all. |
Dec-15-05 | | BrotherJed: Morphy was black in this game and won. |
Dec-24-05 | | blingice: Really? |
Jan-13-06 | | Pawn Ambush: Morphy's sense of time in chess is mind baffling, where did he learn this in what game did he sense this while learning chess 7...b5!? |
Mar-17-06 | | DeepBlade: White played really cramped, or did Morphy cramped him? I would resign after 15. ...Nc6.
White didnt develop fast, Morphy should know, as the master of Open Games. |
Dec-19-06 | | James Bowman: I think Morphy's sense of time and space are unequalled, I found blacks move 7... b5 to be very similar to the Evans Gambit idea of gaining huge tempo and space only Morphy uses this idea as black and not surprising as he is an Evans Gambit Miestro himself. |
Dec-20-07 | | nimh: Rybka 2.3.1 mp, AMD X2 2.01GHz, 10 min per move, threshold 0.33. McConnell 8 mistakes:
5.d3 -0.86 (5.h4 -0.43)
7.c3 -1.04 (7.e5 -0.50)
11.Qe2+ -0.67 (11.Bb5+ -0.02)
12.Bb3 -1.08 (12.Bb5+ -0.65)
14.Bc2 -1.06 (14.Nbd2 -0.71)
16.c4 -3.07 (16.Ba4 -1.01)
17.Nxd4 -4.65 (17.Kh1 -2.07)
21.Kg1 #3 (21.Rxf2 -5.68)
Morphy 3 mistakes:
7...b5 -0.28 (7...d5 -1.04)
13...Ne4 -0.71 (13...Re8 -1.15)
16...Bxd4+ -2.07 (16...g4 -3.07) |
Mar-12-08 | | heuristic: <nimh: mistakes>
18.Qd3 should be considered. 18.Qd1 or 18.Qd5 are significantly better<nimh: threshold 0.33>
12.Bb3 versus Bb5+ and 14.Bc2 versus 14.Nbd2 are nearly equal
(other software engines and my cognitive evaluation!)
maybe the threshold should be larger.
Dec-04-08 | | WhiteRook48: Morphy was black! |
May-12-09 | | gamego: This was the quintessential Morphy. |
Jul-27-09 | | tentsewang: What an idiot, the first one to comment on this game said Morphy lost but he won this won as black. By the way, superb match! |
