May-20-04 | | Owl: Why does Pet resign. Wheres the win for Smylov??? |
May-20-04 | | crafty: 42. ♗e4 ♔h8 43. ♕h1 ♘d7 44. ♗xc6 fxg3 45. fxg3 (eval 2.13; depth 16 ply; 1000M nodes) |

May-20-04 | | chessdr: The best I can come up with is that after 42. Be4 white will trade B and N for R and c6 pawn. The point is that it is a critical pawn (unlike white's g6 pawn), and a GM should be able to win the game with the c5 pawn. In fact, it looks like black also loses the b5 pawn, e.g. 42. Be4 Nd7, 43. Nxc6 Rxc6, 44. Bxc6 Rxc6, 45.Qe2. If 42. ... Qd7 (to try to get the Q to b7 to save the b5 pawn), then 43. Nxc6 Rxc6, 44. Bxc6 Rxc6, 45. d5. Maybe best is 42. ... Qe8, 43. Nxc6 Rxc6, 44. Bxc6 Rxc6, so that after 45. Qe2 Qb8; but after 45. d5 exd5, 46. Qf3 white looks comfortable. Anyway, I'm with you, I would have played on. |

May-23-04 | | Ivax: Maybe petrosian lost because of time?? |
Mar-25-09
 | | Chessical: A thoroughly depressing position especially after <42.Be4>, but surely not yet hopelessly lost? Earlier, <36... Rd7> 37. Nf3 Bf6 38. Bb1 Ree7; seems a more flexible arrangement for the defence. |
Mar-25-09 | | Eisenheim: the finesse with the delayed capture on g6 blossoms into a tactical nightmare for pet. |
Jan-03-16
 | | Penguincw: Petrosian's only loss of the tournament. He went 10/17 (+4,-1,=12), tied Tukmakov for 4th. Also the highest score for a non-undefeated player. |
Sep-30-16 | | ewan14: in my very humble opinion
Petrosian does not play the opening that well
Strange , did he want to take risks to beat Smyslov ? who had a plus score against him |
Dec-07-18 | | Nerwal: 15... b5 is very strange (15... b6 or 15... ♗d7 look normal). Now it's easy to say it, because engines show that ♘e5-c4-d6 doesn't really improve White's position. |
Jul-13-22
 | | Honza Cervenka: The game was probably adjourned at this point, and Petrosian concluded during analysis that his position is hopeless. Immediate 42.Be4 is not the only option of white. |
Jul-13-22 | | sudoplatov: The local Stockfish indicates the Be4, now or later leaves White up 6+ points. Smyslov seems to creep up on Petrosian in a tiger-like manner. |
Jul-13-22 | | sudoplatov: It seems that 35.Qd8 is the big slip. |
Jun-08-23 | | jphamlore: <Honza Cervenka: The game was probably adjourned at this point, and Petrosian concluded during analysis that his position is hopeless. Immediate 42.Be4 is not the only option of white.> Indeed Smyslov in his Smyslov's Best Games Volume ii verifies that Petrosian resigned after adjournment and before play resumed. Smyslov writes <His pieces are passively placed and White is threatening a decisive attack with ♖e4 and ♖d3-f3.> |
Mar-17-25 | | Breyannis Nektarios: Interesting that Smyslov was ready to enter the Botvinnik variation. Maybe he didn't really thought that Petrosian would follow suit. |
