Aug-08-09  megalinks1: On move 60, white played g6. Black had ... R-e5 mate!
Jul-04-16  siggemannen: i think there are some problems with the score here in general :P
Jul-07-16  zydeco: Vaganian had some kind of a tournament at Biel. Quinteros' games always seem to be like this, where he's wriggling out of a nightmare position - a very exciting player.

This is a very cool game, even with the overlooked mate-in-one.

I definitely would have played 48.Rxb7. I'm not sure why Vaganian avoided it.

Fusilli: <zydeco> <I definitely would have played 48.Rxb7. I'm not sure why Vaganian avoided it.>

I wonder as well. Notice that Rxb7 on move 49, where black can't take the h6 because of Rb6+, is ineffective. Black plays 49...Kc6 50.Ra7 Kb6, and Rxh6= comes next.

Aug-01-17  ChessHigherCat: It looks like white could have won a second pawn with 24. Rxc5 (if Re1 25. Bxe1) but in fact it fails to 24...Bb6

<zydeco> <fusilli> I agree about 48. Rxb7, if Kc3 then 49. Rg7 is much stronger now because it's much easier stopping black's isolated a pawn or even sacrificing the rook for it and either the g or h pawn will queen.

Eggman: My kind of game. Both players (I assume) quickly out of book, very exciting endgame, and some added human drama in the event of a spectacular double blunder.

Position after 59...b5

Regarding 60.g6?? b4??, it seems unlikely that both players would have missed the mate-in-1 60...Re5#, but such things do happen, especially during what might well have been a mutual time scramble. Having said that, one does wonder about the correctness of the score.

Nov-19-22  Olavi: <Eggman:> Black of course played 56...Ra8 not Re8. Otherwise White would have had no need to play 59.Ra1, he would have pushed the h-pawn. And he would have played 60.Rxa2. The time control was on move 56.
Nov-19-22  Olavi: The error was mentioned by Timman in New in Chess 12/1985.

This also explains the last move: 66.Rxa1 Rxa1 67.g8Q Rh1# would be embarrassing, but no other 67th move would win anymore.

<Look, ma, wide open board and no checks!>
