Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-01-24  TheaN: Early to this Tuesday. I'm assumed this score is wrong, and so is the puzzle as a result, as 22....Re2 makes no sense at all. White goes up a rook, and the combination after is just a finisher as White simplifies. I'm correct.

On 365 it goes <22.Re2 Re5 23.Rfe1 Ree8 24.Bc2 Rxe2 25.Re2 Re8> leaving us without the rook on f1:

Now I understand <26.Qxf6!> which I assumed would be the answer anyway considering <26....gxf6 (Rxe2 27.Qxg7#) 27.Rxe8+ Kh7> and here a couple of moves win, but went with <28.Re7 +-> pretty much shutting down Black's play and preparing Rxf7+ and Nxd6.

Oct-01-24  Tiggler: I agree with TheaN. 24.Re7+ is mate in 4, but 24.Qxf6 appears to be no better than mate in 7. The move numbers, however, in his post I don't understand.

  takebackok: Think a bit Tuesday, easy queen sac 24. Qxf6 gxf6 25. Rxe8+ Kh7 now i had 26. Ne7+ f5 27. Bxf5+ Kg7 28. Re1 not sure how it ends, but it will end soon.
Oct-01-24  Allderdice83: I went with simplicity. White's up a rook, so trade off pieces. 24. Rxe8+ Nxe8 25. Re1 Nf6 26. Re7 Qb8 27. Nh6+ and now ...

27 ... gxh6 28. Qxf6 (threatening 29. Qxf7+) Qf8 29. Bh7+ Kxh7 30. Rxf7+ Qxf7 31. Qxf7+ Kh8 32. Qxb7, or

27 ... Kf8 28. Rxf7+ Ke8 29. Bg6 with mate coming, or

27 ... Kh8 28. Rxf7 Qd8 29. Rxb7 Qc8 30. Rf7 Qd8 31. Nf5 Ne8 32. Nxg7 h4 33. Nxe8+ Kg8 34. Qg7#

Oct-01-24  latebishop: My thought was 24.Qxf6 gxf6 25.Rxe8+ Kh7 26.Re7 Qc8 27.Rxf7+ Kh8 28. Nh6 winning.
Oct-01-24  Twilight of the Idol: I think in this position, everything wins...?

However, I can also say that sans the extra rook, I intended 24. Qxf6 gxf6 25. Rxe8+ Kh7 26. Re7 Q-any 27. Rxb7 and you sign scoresheets.

Oct-01-24  mel gibson: <22....Re2 makes no sense at all. >

It must be wrong as 24. .. Rxe1 leads to a draw
and the ply 22....Re2 leads to a fast loss for Black.

Anyway - back to the puzzle.

Stockfish 17 says:

24. Qxf6

(24. Qxf6 (1.Qxf6 gxf6 2.Rxe8+ Kh7 3.Rfe1 Qd7 4.R1e7 Bc8 5.Rxc8 Qxc8 6.Nxd6+ Kg8 7.Nxc8 Kg7 8.d6 h4 9.gxh4 Kf8 10.d7 Kg7 11.d8Q f5 12.Qe8 Kg6 13.Qxf7+ Kh6 14.Qh7+) +M14/66 74)

White wins mate in 14.

Oct-01-24  mrgwbland: Was Re2 an otb mouseslip? I don't get it
Oct-01-24  Retireborn: Informator gives 20.Rfe1 as played, not 20.Ree1
Oct-01-24  Cecco: Please, <Retireborn>, correct the entire score according to the Informator.
Oct-01-24  Retireborn: <Cecco> That's it. After 20.Rfe1 the moves given make sense.
Oct-01-24  Cecco: <Retireborn>, you're right. Thanks. Of course black's 22th move becomes Rxe2.

Teyss: The score: there are two possible corrections, one from chess365 (<TheaN> thanks for looking into this) but it's strange notably because of its length and of 23...Ree8 (Rae8 makes more sense) and one from Informator which seems right. <Retireborn> do you submit a correction slip or do I do it?

The puzzle: a wee bit difficult for a Tuesday. The beginning is ok, all is forced since Black cannot decline the Q sac, but then one has to find the quiet 26.Re7 and the different mating patterns. Nice combo though.

Oct-01-24  TheaN: After the corrected score (thanks <Retire and Teyss> for looking more into it, the 365 one didn't really make a lot of sense either so I didn't submit a correction right away):

<24.Qxf6!> takes out the defender of Re8, and Black has no time for 24....Rxe2? 25.Qxg7# <24....gxf6 25.Rxe8+ Kh7>:

click for larger view

Quite a few moves win here. Black's pieces are locked up and the king wide open. As in my original post, my idea (considering I had to go off the original image with a rook on f1) was <26.Re7 +->.

One idea I actually missed was if Black tries to keep the queen on the board (compared to 26....Qxe7 27.Nxe7+ +-) the bishop's free: 26....Qb8 (Qc8 27.Nxd6+ and Qd8 27.Rxb7 +-) 27.Rxb7! Qxb7 28.Nxd6+ +- and White's up two pieces. Regardless, after 26.Re7 +- White can also take on f7 and f6 and/or d6 and Black's can't do anything worthwhile.

Oct-01-24  saturn2: After the queen sac if you dont find 26.Re7 but instead continue with a knight move gets complicated.

  al wazir: Continuation: 25...Kh7 26. Re7 Qd8 (26...Qxd8 27. Nxd8 leaves white a piece up) 27. Rxf7+ Kg8 28. Nh6+ Kh8 29. Rh7#
Oct-01-24  vajeer: Puzzle made complicated by addition of the rook :-) With extra rook I was happy to play no-nonsense Rxe8, lol.
Oct-01-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: The king doesn't think it is simple: 24. Qxf6 (Rxe2?? 25. Qxg7#) gxf6 25. Rxe8+ Kh7 26. Re7 Qc8 (or b8) 27. Rxf7+: A: Kg6 28. Rg7# , B: Kg8 28. Nh6+ Kh8 29. Rh7#, C: 28. Ne7 Qg8 (otherwise ... 29. Rh7#) 29. Nxg8 Kxg8 30. Rxb7 and Re1... e8#.
Oct-01-24  Rosbach: I didn't get it but after checking and knowing the first move was Qxf6 I found the below winning moves:

4. Qxf6 gxf6 25. Rxe8+ Kh7 26. Re7 Qb8 27. Rxf7+ Kh8 28. Nh6 or 24. Qxf6 gxf6 25. Rxe8+ Kh7 26. Re7 Qb8 27. Rxf7+ Kg8 28. Nh6+ Kh8 29. Rh7#
