Chessical: M Vidmar plays the rare and sharp <7.d5> in the Open Ruy Lopez:

<8...Nf6> looks natural, but later 8...f5 9.Bb3 d6 10.c4 Ng6 11.cxb5 axb5 was discovered as a reliable way to equalise.

22.Rxe7+!; if 22...Bxe7+ 23.Qf7

tpstar: <Chessical> Thank you very much for clarifying this variation. 1) Does 7. d5!? have a name? 2) Is there a game reference for your 8 ... f5 line? 3) What do you think of 7 ... bxa4 8. dxc6 d6 instead = Klaus Richter vs Vidmar, 1939

  Chessical: <tpstar> I know <8...f5> 9.Bb3 d6 10.c4 Ng6 11.cxb5 axb5 12.Rxe4 fxe4 13.Ng5 Be7 14.Nxe4 0-0; from Balaskas-Skembris,S/Ano Liosia,1997

I like early f5 drive as I think it is thematic. The alternative: <7...bxa4> 8.dxc6 d6 9.Re1 (9.c4 Be7 10.Qxa4 0-0 11.Be3 f5); 9...Nf6 seems solid enough but less dynamic.

Unfortunately, I don't know if the variation has a name, but as Vidmar is the earliest proponent in the database, why not name it after him? As a great player, he is entilted to a least a variation in the books. At least it won't be called a Vidi-Indian.

Mar-23-06  Whitehat1963: Wow!! Absolutely vicious attack! What a crush!
Apr-20-07  Benzol: <tpstar> 1) Does 7. d5!? have a name?

I believe it's called the "Friess Attack".

Jan-26-08  grasser: I don't think it's the Friess.

Feb-14-09  whiteshark: As Vidmar annotated he found <11.Nc4> in an old opening book written by Oskar Cordel.
