Nov-12-05  Karpova: Korchnoi hates those stonewall formations and shows how to deal with them! black's bishop was completely useless throughout the game.

After 49.Nc6 black cannot prevent the white queen from infiltrating his position (49...qc7 50.qf6+ qg7 51.qd8)

Fusilli: <Karpova> Yes, Korchnoi's straightforward plan of trading away Grischuk's good bishop worked smoothly. Perhaps black should wait for white to develop the queenside's knight before committing to the stonewall?

Trading queens on move 40 should have given black better chances of drawing.

  plang: 9 Qc1 aiming to exchange dark square bishops was a new move; 9 Nc3 had been played previously. 15..b5 could have been strongly answered by 16 a4! but perhaps Black should have tried for kingside play: eg. 15..Ng4 16 Ne2..e5 17 dxe..Ndxe5 18 Nxe5..Nxe5 19 Rad1..Ng4 20 Ng3. Korchnoi's 19 b5! gained space and prevented Black's plan of ..b5 and ..Nc4. 30 Ne2!? was an unusual decision; more conventional would have been 30 hxg..hxg 31 g5 with some winning chances. Korchnoi found the right moment to offer the exchange of queens with 40 Qc3 taking advantage of the passivity of the Black minor pieces; eg.(1) 40..Qxc3 41 Nxc3..Kf8 42 e4..dxe 43 Nxe4 and an attack on the b-pawn will be decisive and (2) 40..Qc5 41 Qxc5..bxc 42 b6..Nc6 (42..c4? 43 Nd4!) 43 Bb5..Nb8 44 Nc1..c4 45 Ne2..Kf8 46 Nd4..Ke7 47 e4 and Black's numerous weakneses should decide.
