Perhaps Black was trying to confuse the blindfolded Tarrasch. In 1880 Tarrasch was nowhere near the player he later became. It's quite common to see the sighted player slip in a wobbly move to try and catch the blindfold player out.

I see you have been doing some research and found and posted in the

Chigorin vs A Ascharin, 1881 game.

Where Black won. Though in my source (megabase) the player of the Black pieces in that game was Simon Alapin.
