  WTHarvey: Fwiw, 36.Qxh7 is a mate in 5. ... Nf7 37.Rg8 Rd7 38.Rxf8+ Kxf8 39.Ng6+ Ke8 40.Qg8#
May-09-06  Milo: I saw this puzzle (white to mate in 5 after 35...Ke8 on Harvey's site (under "missed mates",) and thought the solution was (36)Rg8 Rxg8 Qxh7 Rxg2+ Nxg2 after which I didn't see Rc7! Qxc7+ Kf8 Qg7+ Ke8 Re7#, and the mate is one move too slow.

I think Harvey's site is great; it's free and has hundreds cpu checked tactical puzzles which actually occured in practical play.

  WTHarvey: 1.Rg8 is close.

1.Qxh7 Nf7 2.Rg8 Rd7 3.Rxf8+ Kxf8 4.Ng6+ Ke8 5.Qg8#

If 1.Rg8 Rxg8 2.Qxh7 Rxg2+ 3.Nxg2 (if 3.Kxg2 Qxe4+) Rd7 4.Qxd7+ Kf8 5.Qg7+ Ke8 6.Qe7# A quirky difference: If the knight wasn't out of play, it could have wrapped things up quicker.
