Aug-31-10  turkish tickler: After playing RxN, Reti jumped up on the table and shouted "Miniature! Boo-Yah!" And Sterk cried like a little girl.
Apr-05-11  Llawdogg: 18 ... c5? was weak. He should have just let the pawn go and played Rae8. That pawn move pushed Reti to play Nf5 and the black queen was running out of space.

20 Rxf6! was fantastic! This should be a game of the day or at least a puzzle or something. This game should be recognized. Where's the love?

May-31-11  TheRavenPK: I guess the main continuation is
20..gxf6 21.Qg3+ Kf7 22.Qg7+ Ke6 23.Qxf8 with few side variations, all of which lose devastating quantum of material?

Réti was really good player.

May-31-11  TheRavenPK: Yes, now I see that although 23.Qxf8 is also winning and perhaps more beautiful, white has even better 23.Qe7+ Kxf5 24.g4+ with a royal fork.. gg anyway :)
Jul-14-11  wordfunph: <TheRavenPK: I guess the main continuation is 20..gxf6 21.Qg3+ Kf7 22.Qg7+ Ke6 23.Qxf8 with few side variations, all of which lose devastating quantum of material?>

<TheRavenPK> less queen with 23.Qe7+ Kxf5 24.g4+ forking the king and queen.

Sep-19-12  KaleyK: The Rxf6 continuation ... 20...Rxf6 21. Qxd5+ Kf8 22. Qxa8+ Kf7 23. Qd5+ Kf8 24. Qxc5+ Ke8 25.Re1+ ...eventually the white knight executes a check and the black queen is lost.
Jul-18-18  Retireborn: Played in the Cafe Central, according to my notes (from Golombek?)

Can anybody confirm that it was an offhand game and not part of a tournament?

Telemus: Kalendovsky, p 17: "Za cely rok 1910 nesehral Reti prakticky zadnou turnajovou partii a dva kratke zapasy s madarskym mistrem Sterkem (přesny výsledek neznáme) a Spielmannem (0,5:4,5) nestacily k udrzeni zadouci formy. Z prvniho Retiho zapasu se dochovala jedna teoreticky zajmava partie." Then this game follows under the header: "Viden 3.4.1910 (kavarna Central)".

Google translates: "For the whole of 1910, Reti did not have a practically back tournament and two short games with Sterk (exact result unknown) and Spielmann (0.5: 4.5) were not enough to keep the guts out. From the first Reti's match, one theoretically captured lot has survived."

Another translation shows a somewhat different view.

Jul-18-18  Retireborn: <Telemus> Many thanks for that.

I suppose "two short games" means two short matches, and this game ("one theoretically captured lot has survived") is the only known game from that match.

That there was a match with Spielmann as well comes as news to me. He (Spielmann) seems to have played quite a few matches that year.

Thanks again.
