Feb-18-10  Dravus: I.A. Horowitz's Golden Treasury of Chess (Wellmuth) gives the finale as: 29 ... Kg8!
30 Nxh2 h6+
31 Kg6 Rf5!
32 exf5 Nf4 mate

But what if White went 31 Kh5? Would this save him?

Feb-19-10  Dravus: Horowitz's version uses different numbering of the moves, also. A slightly altered dynamic occurs in the same setting as given here at CG.
Nov-12-10  sevenseaman: Configuration of the forces is all important. If one counted, Black is heavily outnumbered in pawns and pieces; but his men are placed so tellingly.

Phony Benoni: This game was published in the American Chess Bulletin, November 1930, p.165. The good news is that it is definitely a real game. It was played in the Hauptturnier (Minor Tournament) at Frankfurt (1930).

The bad news is that the ACB says White resigned after 31...Rf5. Spoilsport.

Aug-12-13  phil6875: <sneaky pete> The improvement would be 22. Nf3.

After 23. Rg1 it's mate in 8 moves. The same as the game up to 27. Kg5 then,

27...Rff6 28. Qxf8+ Kxf8 29. Kg4 Rfg6+ 30. Kf3 Nxg1#, Mate.

This game was used by Purdy (writing under the name of 'Chielamangus') in a sketch where Hitler plays Napoleon at chess.

Also a copy of the game noted up by Alekhine in Deutsche Schachzeitung in 1930.

perfidious: On seeing the heading, I wondered what defined the Columbus Variation--must be 4.Bc4.

Hi Perfidious.

4.Bc4 is interesting.

Black goes for the Two Knights (as here) because there is no Ng5 and Bb5+ variation, nor a pin on the c6 Knight with the Bishop in the 5.e5 line

However if they go mainline Two Knights.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. d4 exd4 5. O-O Nxe4 6. Re1 d5 7. Bxd5 Qxd5 8.Nc3 Qa5 9. Nxe4 Be6 10. Bd2 Bb4 11. c3 dxc3 12. bxc3 Be7 13. c4

As in H Vatter vs T Brueckner, 1988

Black's best move according to theory and choice is 13...Qa6.

But not here. Because 3.Bb5 pulled the a7 pawn to a6 then 4.Bc4.

FSR: 4.Bc4 is a weird move. Not losing or anything, but Black is happy to have ...a6 for free.
