Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-18-24  mel gibson: A fairly easy combo today:

Stockfish 16 says:

21. Rxf8+

(21. Rxf8+ (1.Rxf8+ Kxf8 2.Bxd6+ Nxd6 3.Qxd6+ Qe7 4.Rg8+ Kxg8 5.Qxe7 Rh1+ 6.Kd2 Rh2+ 7.Ke3 f4+ 8.Kxf4 Be6 9.Qxb7 Rxc2 10.Ke3 Re8 11.Qb6 Rg2 12.Ne2 Bxa2 13.Qxa6 Be6 14.b4 Rd8 ) +4.43/41 190)

score for White +4.43 depth 41.

Jan-18-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: Seems easy, but it isn't. The first move is simple: 21. Bxd6 Nxd6 22. Qxd6 (Be6?? 23. Rxf8#). but B can escape with 22... Qe7! 23. Rxf8+?! Kxf8 24. Rg8+ Kxg8 25. Qxe7 Bc6 and survives. Other wise: 23. Rxf8+?! Qxf8 23. Qe5+ Kd8 and attack is over. This is not a good line!

Let's try the inversion theme idea: 21. Rxf8+ Kxf8 22. Bxd6+ (Ke8? 23. Rg8#). Nxd6 23. Qxd6+ (Ke8 24. Rg8#) again Qe7 and we arrive at the same line: 24. Rg8+ Kxg8 25. Qxe7 Bc6 26. Qg5+ Kf8 27. Qxf5 Rh1+ 28. Kd2 Rd8+ 29. Ke3 Rh2.

Someone will ask me: why 25... Bc6? Because if 25... Be6?! 26. exf5 (Bxf5? Qg5+ and captures the ♗). 26... Bc4 27. Qg5+ Kf8 28. f6! B position degenerates. E.g. Rxf3 29. Qg7+ Ke8 30. Qg8+ Kd7 31. Qg4+ capture the ♖. For 28. f6 the king recommends 28... Be6 again to keep the ♖protected.

Maybe, W find another plan better than I saw.

Jan-19-24  lentil: Why B resigned in the final position was not immediately obvious to me, because 28. ... Bxf5 seems to solve the double attack, but then 29 Ne4 'forks' the R/c5 and the 'forking square' g4, and the reply Bxe4 just drops a R. I wonder how far in advance W saw this continuation.

Exactly, black is going to lose another material. But 26...Kh7(?) was not forced, 26...Kf8 would have been a bit better, though white should win this anyway.

Jan-19-24  jffun1958: 28. ... Bxf5 29. Ne4 Rc7 30. Ng5+ Kh6 31. Nxh3 and W will fork and win a rook.

Went with 21.Bxd6 Nxd6 and Rxf8+ which swings back into the game. Not sure what happens After winning the Queen but pretty sure it is winning. Stopped there.

Played though game the combo really starts with 20.Nf5 and Black playing 17...Rxh2 was too greedy v doubled Rooks on the g-file. 17....Bf8 looks OK. Well it does mot walk into the combo.
