Sep-20-05  Jaymthetactician: Why noy 8...Nd8? 8...Nb8 is bad as it takes back development.

12...a6 doesnt achieve anything, better for black is 12...c6, 12.dxc6,Nxc6 13.h3,Bh4 14.g4,Bg6

is 18...Bxf2 sound? It looks like white is winning to me in the end. Anyone know how black wins? White has the passed pawn on the 6th and black's in trouble. Pretty good play for someone back then, I'd say that Polerio's strength would be like a modern begginner, which is quite strong for the late 1500's. Saduleto played a good game too, maybe this came from his score sheet and he blundered horrifically on move 25 so he didnt include the rest of the game. I've fed some modern GM games into computers and on a few occasions missed a forced mate allowing the other side to win, but this is due to time pressure nowaday's.

25.Nc5 and white is better.

Sep-20-05  Swapmeet: The reason behind 8...Nb8 is quite simple. From b8 it clearly has a square to come back out on d7, whereas on d8 it is just stuck. Not to mention the fact that the knight is no better developed on d8 than on b8.

Sep-19-07  wolfmaster: Saduleto has a winning position here! Why resign?
Oct-06-08  just a kid: <wolfmaster>Honestly I think black is winning.Black's pieces are more active while for the time being White's queen will retreat back to c4 after Rb6.White's Queen is doing nothing but protecting the a6 pawn.Black's Knights are ready to jump into f4,and after Nh5 and Nhf4.Better yet Black should just play Bd7 followed by Bb5.
Oct-03-15  The Kings Domain: The first modern game recorded? It's amazing how this half a millennia old game resembles a Kasparov-Karpov match. It's a shame the game isn't complete, unless there's a reason lost to history on why white resigned.

moronovich: When I look at the age this game have been played it is very good chess. Games like this happens every around the globe.
Apr-07-17  Yigor: It's similar to the previous Polerio - Lorenzo game with 8. d5 instead of 8. a4. The first real inaccuracy is 9...Bg4?! Better moves: 9...h6 or 9...O-O.
May-19-21  phenstyle: Seems like one of the most strategic/closed recorded games up to this point.
