Aug-06-07  MenisfromVenis: Between reading 'White to move' and seeing the Q sac followed by R back rank mate I must have taken 1 or 2 secs. Couldn't log in yesterday...
Aug-06-07  willyfly: I need a <very> easy puzzle after the past few days - my mind needs to experience occasional success in order to be reassured that success is achievable - Black is the exchange down (♖ for ♘) but has an additional ♙ - White is about to lose the ♖b6 - something drastic is needed and it comes in the form of the traditional Monday ♕ sac

25 ♕xf8+ ♔xf8 26 ♖b8#
as simple as it gets

thanks <CG.com> I needed that

good luck <dzechiel> I'll be rootin' for ya

Aug-06-07  jon01: Good luck dzechiel, I like your comments on harder puzzles.

I'll try too.

1-0

Aug-06-07  zanshin: <Fezzik: PS: I'm amazed that Black played on to mate in this game. Even in 1868, Black must have felt embarrassed to miss such a shot.>

I don't think black missed the mate. I just think it was fashionable at the time to play the game to its conclusion. But that's just speculation because there are so many early games that are played to mate.

Aug-06-07  AlexandraThess: The easiest Monday puzzle I've seen so far :)
Aug-06-07  YouRang: Yes, easy -- as it should be on Monday. Black's back rank looks protected, but its an illusion.

The problem with having a back rank weakness is that it makes an enemy rook is as dangerous as a queen.

Aug-06-07  homersheineken: Can some explain 11) .. B5? I don't understand what black thought it could accomplish.

Peligroso Patzer: Is this line really known as the “Compromised Defense”? (I assume that the reckless 7. … dxc3? is the move that would have earned the variation that inauspicious sobriquet.) When was it so designated?

For my part, I think I would be better disposed to taking up a variation going under such a moniker as the “more-than-slightly-dubious, caution-to-the-winds counterattack” than something known as the “Compromised Defense”.

Aug-06-07  triangulation: yeah. piece of cake. 1 out of one. good start.
Aug-06-07  kevin86: It took me a minute or so. White is up material,so I looked defensively-then I saw the #1 trump card:a forced mate in two. Funny,if white were down a piece of so,I would have seen the queen sac sooner. After all,it is Monday

I am sure the idea behind 11. ... b5 was to open lines for the a8-♖ and c8-♗ with tempo. More to be criticized was Black's 13. ... ♘xe7, which allowed White to get a position in which he was up an exchange whilst maintaining his attack. (Black probably overlooked 14. ♘d6+.)

Peligroso Patzer: After 18. … ♕f5, Black was beginning to generate some threats against White’s weak K-side light squares. 19. ♖ab1 was a cute way to deal with this threat, inviting Black to fall into 19. ... ♕h3?? 20.♕xf7+ ♖xf7 21.♖b8+ ♗d8 22.♖xd8#.
Aug-06-07  ChessMan94: Very easy? No, this is too easy!
Aug-06-07  nfazli: what if 21...Qh3 22.Rf3..Bxf3
Aug-06-07  Rodrigo Gutierrez: <AlexandraThess: The easiest Monday puzzle I've seen so far :)> Same here: probably the only Chessgames puzzle I've solved instantly. One can only wish that such positions would ever happen in the games we play...

playground player: The Queen just eats the Rook on f8: "Alimentary, my dear Watson."
Aug-06-07  gBizzle: man white owned.

<playground player: The Queen just eats the Rook on f8: "Alimentary, my dear Watson.">

i was about to correct you for saying alimentary then i saw the part about the queen eating the rook.

Aug-06-07  Lifelong Patzer: Got it right away! Now on to the rest of the week!

fm avari viraf: One star, u just shoot & I'm sure u get! 25.Qxf8+ Kxf8 & 26.Rb8# Even, such little tactics contribute much more.
Aug-06-07  ruzon: <nfazli: what if 21...Qh3 22.Rf3..Bxf3>

More like 21. ... Qh3 22. f3. If 22. ... Bb6+, then 23. Rxb6!, so 22. ... Bc6 23. Rf2 followed later by f4 and/or Bf1 if need be.

Aug-07-07  patzer2: Bobby Fischer teaches back rank mate after 25. Qxf8+! .
Mar-13-15  zanzibar: This game is from the 1st North German Chess Congress, held in Hamburg, May 31, 1868.

Maybe a little harder than a Monday problem...

White to move.

Mar-13-15  zanzibar: I should have added that Black's 23...Qe5-f5 is the losing move, and it should be the starting position for the final tactic.
