Oct-23-05  aw1988: Horrendous blunder!
Oct-23-05  iron maiden: It might have been desperation, since Black was in serious trouble anyway.

  tpstar: Maybe Black intended 17 ... Nf3 only to see 18. Qd5 Nxh4 19. Qh5+ & 20. Qxh4 and White keeps the piece.

Black might live after 16 ... Nc5 17. Qh3 Qg5 18. Nb5 Nce6 although White stands better.

Oct-28-05  Cyphelium: <tpstar> 16.- ♘c5 17. ♕h3 ♕g5 18. ♘b5 seems to fail after 18.- ♗xg4. For example 19. ♘xc7+ ♔d8 20. ♖dg1 ♗xh3 21. ♖xg5 hxg5 22. ♘xa8 ♖xh4 or 19. ♕g2 ♗xd1 20. ♘xc7+ ♔d8 21. ♘xa8 ♗xc2. 19. ♕h2 ♗xd1 20. ♗xf4 ♕f6 doesn't seem to work for white either.

Instead 16.- ♘c5 17. ♕h3 ♕g5 18. f3 with ♘f5 coming might be a better idea for white.

Sep-27-07  RookFile: I'm sure Morphy was just quaking in his boots when he heard about this game.

sachistu: Does anyone have a source for this game? It was not one of their games from the Vienna tournament. They played at least one 'free game' at Vienna, apparently right after the tournament. (See the C00 game with White winning in 41 moves.) However, I could not find this game listed in Bachmann's book on Steinitz.

Steinitz did reach a similar position after move 9 in his game against Winawer at Vienna, 1882. Had Black played 9...Nf6 in the game given here, it would have transposed into the Winawer-Steinitz game. Although, these could be the correct players. I suppose one could classify Steinitz' play as 'experimental'. This may be another casual game.

Apr-07-17  Paarhufer: <sachistu: Does anyone have a source for this game?> Deutsche Schachzeitung 1873, page 363. Casual game.

<However, I could not find this game listed in Bachmann's book on Steinitz.> I have the reprint of the second edition, and there it is game no. 340a in volume 1.
