Dec-28-05  Gameaddict: I like white's methodical and consistent play in this game; especially the manouevre 19. Bh3 and 20. BxN so as to play f5 without allowing black to place his knight on e5.

LIFE Master AJ: <Gameaddict> Thanks. One of my better games. It also came from the tournament where I tied for the title of FL Champion with Master Nick Palaveda, but lost it on tiebreaks.

This game was also published in the state magazine as well.

LIFE Master AJ: I recently RE-Analyzed this game at a student's house on his computer. The findings were absolutely stunning

There were many strong players watching this game to include a number of players with FIDE titles. Nearly EVERYBODY had a different opinion about the moves! I once showed this game to a GM, he was extremely critical of MANY of my moves.

After the game was over ... in the post-mortem analysis ... just about everyone and their brother had a different opinion of the quality of my moves ... or what some of the alternatives were. One IM was so critical of my moves ... showing me many improvements. I stated - several different times - that the game appeared to be linear and that I doubted that anyone could find any easy improvements. Ea Imagine my surprise when Stockfish showed that so many of my moves were simply the best.

If anyone can post a good computer analysis ... I would greatly appreciate it!

All "book" to this point, although Stockfish doesn't care for 5...g6, 9...Nd4, or 11.Nd5.
See A J Goldsby vs R Holt, 1993 [analysis]

Here is the Deep Rybka 4.1 x64 evaluation of White's play at 12-ply with higher scoring moves given in parenthesis:

13...Nd7 14.Bxg7 +0.79
14...Kxg7 15.h4 +0.77
15...h5 16.g4 +0.92
16...Nf6 17.g5 +0.92
17...Nd7 18.f4 +0.77 (18.Qd4+ +0.92)
18...Qb6 19.Bh3 +1.07 (19.Re1 +1.16; 19.Rh3 +1.10)
19...Rc7 20.Bxd7 +1.21 (20.Rhe1 +1.48)
20...Rxd7 21.Rhf1 +0.79 (21.f5 +1.21; 21.Qc3+ +0.81)
21...Rc7 22.f5 +1.28
22...Rfc8 23.Rc1 +1.79
23...Rc4 24.fxg6 +1.77
24...fxg6 25.Qe2 +2.74
25...Qc7 26.c3 +3.06 (26.Rf2 +5.20; 26.Rf3 +3.54)
26...Qd7 27.Rf2 +2.69 (27.Rf3 +3.22; 27.Rce1 +2.90)
27...Rxh4 28.Rcf1 +2.83
28...Re8 29.Rf7+ (Mate in 14)
29...Kh8 30.Qf2 (Mate in 13)
1-0

Both Stockfish and Rybka appear to calculate 21.Rhf1 as White's weakest move, giving back some of the advantage. Both engines prefer an immediate 21.f5.

Stockfish didn't care for 15.h4, but Rybka didn't have an issue with that move; perhaps just engine preference or Stockfish saw something beyond Rybka's horizon (38 ply vs 12 ply).

perfidious: Is it possible that <fishie>, by panning 5....g6, could turn decades of established theory on its head and thereby cause the Dragon to pass into desuetude?

LIFE Master AJ: TY Coming from anyone else, it would not mean as much. But since you have won so many tournaments, (including how many LA State Championships?,); and you are a greatly respected chess teacher ...

IT MEANS THE WORLD TO ME!!! :)

TY, Sir.

LIFE Master AJ: And Ron Holt ... if I remember correctly ... Mr. Holt has a good record against me and probably had won our previous meeting ... so this game had special significance for me.

  LIFE Master AJ: Also ... in 1993 ... I don't think I was a master yet.

(Although I am not 100% sure.)

LIFE Master AJ: I stand corrected.

I looked up the CT, I was 2230 going into this tournament ... my bad.
