playground player: OK, I know it's called an Arabian Mate, I saw it, and I sacrificed the Queen to get it. But what I don't know is WHY it's called the Arabian Mate. Can anybody tell me?
Sep-28-09  A Karpov Fan: I thought is was becasue of Arabs riding horses and elephants into battle. Or something like that.
Sep-28-09  MaxxLange: I have heard that this mate is discussed, with an illustration, in an old Arabian manuscript.
Sep-28-09  ZUGZWANG67: <<playground player>: OK, I know it's called an Arabian Mate, I saw it, and I sacrificed the Queen to get it. But what I don't know is WHY it's called the Arabian Mate. Can anybody tell me?>

I read somewhere that it is related with the fact that the mate in question is delivered by the two only pieces that have kept their original mode of moving, invented by the ancient arabs.

Peace!

fm avari viraf: White after playing 37.Qxg6+ must have asked: Are you feeling Fine Dake?
Sep-28-09  wals: Black's moves 32...Kxf6 (h6) and
34...Qa4 (Rxd6)
were fine for Fine.
Sep-28-09  ruzon: I didn't like Dake's choice of weakening his kingside pawns with 19...f6. I preferred Bd7 or Bf5.
Sep-28-09  felixd: I love the Arabian mate :D
Sep-28-09  WhiteRook48: this was so easy, 37 Qxg6+ hxg6 38 Nf6+ Kh8 39 Rxh7#
Sep-28-09  e fred: I understand that the combination has been intiated at 30) Qa1
- Question: Is it a winner move ?
What if 30).... h6
White is in a better situation, but the combination seems to be impossible now. Is it correct ? I think that Fine saw it and played hoping that Dake could fail in his analysis. And you, kibitzer's ?
Sep-29-09  patzer2: <LIFE Master AJ> Good observation regarding 30. Qa1!! with the idea of 31. Qc1!, planning a neat discovered attack and clearance combination.

If 36...Rd7, then I suppose 37. Rdc1 would be sufficient.

Sep-29-09  Gilmoy: <ZUGZWANG67: ... the mate in question is delivered by the two only pieces that have kept their original mode of moving, invented by the ancient arabs.>

Close enough. Arabs didn't invent (the ancient game that became) chess, but they did carry it from the Indo-China region to the borders of Europe.

Arab mate is also possible in modern xiang chi (Chinese chess).

Sep-29-09  kevin86: It's mate in three:

37 ♕xg6+ hxg6 38 ♘f6+ ♔h8 39 ♖h7#

An Arabian mate as a sequel to a queen sac!

DOUBLE PLAY!

Oct-13-09  mrsaturdaypants: Thanks <Manic>. I must have missed the rook capture.
Apr-28-10  SpiritedReposte: Arabian mate has my vote as prettiest mate! Simple and pure. Smothered is cool too.

Fusilli: <Eduardo> When he played 30.Qa1, maybe, but most definitely when he played 32.Nxf6.

Nice finish, actually.

Apr-09-12  Eduardo Bermudez: Very nice finish !!
May-19-12  Eduardo Bermudez: Coherence, coordination and harmony in white moves !!
Dec-16-13  Eduardo Bermudez: I like it like that !

An Englishman: Good Evening: White's organization of his attack starting with 30.Qa1 astounds me, and my favorite move is 32.Rc2. It drives away the Queen with tempo, allows the White Queen to capture the g-pawn with check, and then the Rc2 is already perfectly placed to join the attack with Rc7+. Astonishing efficiency.
