Apr-05-10 | | Bozantium: Qf3 wins |
|
Apr-05-10 | | goldfarbdj: As usual on Monday, I looked first at the queen sac. Qg2+ was the more obvious one, but it didn't work; then I looked at Qf3+ and it did. |
|
Apr-05-10 | | zooter: For some strange reason I thought the king was on h2 and the rook was pinned for a minute or so Anyways,
29...Qf3+ 30.Rxf3 (only move) Rxh2#
All forced and as easy as they come |
|
Apr-05-10 | | 310metaltrader: and if kh4, what is the quickie mate? |
|
Apr-05-10 | | dzechiel: Black to move (29...?). Material even. "Very Easy." For some reason, this one took me about a minute to solve. Once I considered the key move, I then saw the whole solution immediately, but I spent time looking at 29...Rxf2, 29...Qh1, 29...Qg2+, 29...Bb5 and only when nothing was working did I start looking for really forcing moves. That's when I saw 29...Qf3+
White has only two legal replies.
30 Kh4
Not 30 Rxf3 Rxh2#.
30...Rxf2
Not only can white not recapture (31 Bxf2 Qxd3), white can't even try to pick up the lose bishop with 31 Qxd7
because black is now threatening
31...Bf6+ 32 g5 Rxh2#
Time to check and see when white resigned. |
|
Apr-05-10 | | 310metaltrader: what if 31nxe5, then rxh2, then 32kg5 |
|
Apr-05-10 | | GaeBulg: This is a mate in 6...but I didn't think a Monday puzzle should be so hard. I only saw 29...Qf3+ 30 Kh4 (if Rxf3 Rxh2#) Bf6+ 31. Bg5 (forced) Qxd3 winning the white queen. I figured that would be the best move if the guy avoided the mate; however, there is a mate in 6...so I guess that the mate in 6 would be the full solution. |
|
Apr-05-10 | | Dr. J: Not quite a two-mover if White declines the sac: 29...Qf3+ 30 Kh4 Rxf2 and White cannot recapture on f2. Now if 31 Nxe5 Rxh2+ 32 Kg5 h6+ 33 Kxg6 Be8+ 34 Nf7 Bxf7#. Or 31 Qxd7 Rxh2+ 32 Kg5 Bf6#. |
|
Apr-05-10 | | dzechiel: <310metaltrader: what if 31 Nxe5 Rxh2+, 32 Kg5>? 32...h6+ 33 Kxg6 Be8+ 34 Nf7 Bxf7# |
|
Apr-05-10 | | 310metaltrader: thanks dz - great to have you back - did you try any blindfold chess while you were out? |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: This took a bit of thinking for myself as well, but it was worth it to find that combination. |
|
Apr-05-10 | | Brandon plays: How is this very easy? It took me about 20-30 seconds to find the winning Qf3+! That's not very easy. |
|
Apr-05-10 | | SamAtoms1980: This Monday is not all skin and bone.
It took me a minute or two to find the crowner, 29 ... Qf3+!!! when 30 Rxf3 permits 30 ... Rxh2#. If White turns down the queen with 30 Kh4, 30 ... Bf6+! costs him at least a rook because his bishop is pinned (31 Bg5 Bxg5+ 32 Kxg5 Qxd3, or 31 g5 Rxf2 32 gxf6 Rxh2+ 33 Kg5 Rh5#). |
|
Apr-05-10
 | | tarek1: Two simple variations :
<29...Qf3!+>
A) <30.Rxf3 Rxh2#>
B) <30.Kh4 Bf6#>
That's it ! |
|
Apr-05-10
 | | tarek1: Of course Bf6 isn't mate sorry, we just win the queen <31.Bg5 Bxg5+ 32.Kxg5 Qxd3> |
|
Apr-05-10 | | zooter: Ok, I missed the variation starting with Kh4 which is bad, but usually in a Monday you don't have so much variations. 29...Qf3+ 30.Kh4 Rxf2 and
a) 31.Bxf2 is not possible as the queen is hanging
b) 31.Qxd7 is not possible since Bf6+ followed by 32...Rxh2# (whether white interposes with the bishop or pawn) |
|
Apr-05-10 | | zooter: <tarek1: Of course Bf6 isn't mate sorry, we just win the queen <31.Bg5 Bxg5+ 32.Kxg5 Qxd3> 31.g5 and then what? |
|
Apr-05-10 | | lost in space: I love Monday's!
29...Qf3+ 30. Kh4
(30. Rxf3 Rxh2#)
30...Rxf2 31. Nxe5
(31. Qxd7 Rxh2+ 32. Kg5 Qf6# or 32. Bxf6#) (31. Bxf2 Qxd3 0:1) 31...Rxh2+ 32. Kg5 h6+ 33. Kxg6
(and now not Qf6?? mate, as I thought, but)
33...Be8+ 34. Nf7 Qxf7# or 34...Bxf7#) |
|
Apr-05-10 | | turbo231: < Brandon plays : How is this very easy? It took me 20-30 seconds to find thee winning qf3+! That's not very easy. > How do you think I feel? It took me 2 or 3 minutes! |
|
Apr-05-10 | | Eduardo Leon: Black forces mate with the following sequence:
<29...♕f3+ 30.♔h4> Not 30.♖xf3 ♖xh2#.
<30...♖xf2 31.♘xe5> Unfortunately for white, the ♗e3 is pinned. Also, if 31.♕xd7, then 31...♗f6+ 32.g5 ♖xh2#. <31...♖xh2+ 32.♔g5 h6+ 33.♔xg6 ♗e8+ 34.♘f7+ ♗xf7#> click for larger view |

Apr-05-10 | | TheBish: Cochrane vs Somacarana, 1856 Black to play (29...?) "Very Easy"
Back to my favorite thing about Mondays!
29...Qf3+!
This is made possible because the Rf2 is overloaded, i.e. responsible for shielding Black's Ra2 from h2, as well as defending f3. 30. Kh4
Or 30. Rxf3 Rxh2#.
30...g5+! (faster than 30...Rxf2 31. Nxe5) and now:
A) 31. Bxg5 Qxf2+ 32. Kh5 Be8+ 33. Kh6 Bg7#.
B) 31. Kxg5 Bf6+ 32. Kh5 Qh3#.
C) 31. Kh5 Qh3+ 32. Kxg5 h6+ 33. Kg6 Be8+ (or 33...Qxg4+) 34. Rf7 Bxf7#. Pretty cool - from the diagram, it's Black to play and mate in 6! |

Apr-05-10 | | dzechiel: <310metaltrader: thanks dz - great to have you back - did you try any blindfold chess while you were out?> Hi, Metal Trader. I have been posting again for a couple of weeks now, but while I was "offline" I did play a couple of games of blindfold chess. One game against my co-worker, Matt, in which he took five minutes (and sight of the board) and I had unlimited time, but no sight of the board. I won when he ran out of time (after all, I just had to avoid getting checkmated), but the game wasn't pretty. A second game against another co-worker, Avi (with no timer on the game), ended in a draw. Blindfold chess is something that just takes practice, practice, practice. |

Apr-05-10
 | | eternaloptimist: very easy indeed...of course a ♕ sac (or offered sac) is involved (29...♕f3+)} since it's monday. The ♖ can't stop both of the # threats, so it's game over @ this point. I had never heard of somacarana before until I came across this game, but he came up w/ a pretty good move in this game w/ 29...♕f3. |

Apr-05-10 | | patzer2: For today's easy Monday, Black whips up a mating attack with the sham Queen sacrifice 29...Qf3+! |
|
Apr-05-10 | | agb2002: Black has the bishop pair for a bishop and a knight. White threatens 30.Nxe5.
Black would deliver mate with ... Rxh2 if the white rook could be diverted. Therefore, 29... Qf3+ 30.Kh4 (30.Rxf3 Rxh2#) Rxf2: A) 31.Qxd7 Rxh2+ 32.Kg5 B(Q)f6#.
B) 31.Nxe5 Rxh2+ 32.Kg5 h6+ 33.Kxg6 Be8+ 34.Nf7 B(Q)xf7#. C) 31.Bxf2 g5+ (or 31... Qxd3)
C.1) 31.Kh5 Be8+ and mate in two.
C.2) 31.Kxg5 Bf6+ 32.Kh5 (32.Kh6 Qf4+ and mate next) Be8+ and mate in three. |
