An Englishman: Good Evening: Sacrifice first, think later. No sense wasting clock time when you have such well-known opportunity.

Breunor: Yes first 4 moves were crying out to be played.
Mar-07-25  mel gibson: I saw the first ply but it's too hard after that.

Here I tried 14...Rh8. The game may proceed as 14...Rh8 15. fxe5 Nxe5 16. Qg3 Nh5 17. Bf6+ Kf8 18. Qh4 Nxf6 19. Qxh8+ Ng8 20. Bb3 Be8

Here it feels like black is able to resist, but engine gives it a score of +5.61 suggesting 21.Rf5 Bd7 22. Raf1 Bxf5 23. Rxf5 Qe8 24. Kh1 Nc6 25. Rxf7+ Qxf7 26. Bxf7 Kxf7 27. Qh7+ Kf8

From here black's poor development and bad piece positioning leads to his downfall.

paulalbert: This game reminds me of a similar game Alexandra Kosteniuk lectured about at the Marshall Chess Club many years ago where her GM male opponent played g5 when his K was already castled king side. She asked the audience what move they would consider and I was the only one who immediately answered that I would consider sacrificing on g5 but I was not sure whether it should be the B or the N.

Unfortunately I do not remember who her opponent was so I cannot look up the game and remember what was the right decision in her game.

Here my instinct was to sacrifice the N and keep the pin in place.

Of course Capablanca's principle that Q and N work better than Q and B makes one at least consider both possibilities.

perfidious: <paulalbert....Of course Capablanca's principle that Q and N work better than Q and B makes one at least consider both possibilities.>

That precept was meant to apply to endgames, in which it is very often the case, the Q/N tandem complementing one another.
