Apr-16-10  bob88: wonderful game!!4 passed pawns & knight vs 2 rooks after 50.bxa5,just shows how numbers can also be useful against 2 powerful pieces after 50.bxa5
Apr-16-10  shakespeare: After move 21 I thought: well played by black - eliminating the strenth of white based on his light square strategy - the situation looked drawish and dull - but then this mind-blowing endgame skills - definitely at least one of the best endgames ever!
Apr-16-10  ounos: Two rooks up...but four queens down.
Apr-16-10  SpiritedReposte: That is just a tsunami of pawns. I would be very scared if I were black.

tpstar: This one ended up at #11 in Game Collection: 2009's Greatest Chess Games missing the Top Ten by a single point. I couldn't wait to use "Pawns Are Better Than Rooks In the Endgame" for a title.

The game and the pun are both 4's. Outstanding.

Apr-16-10  wordfunph: 49.b4 whoaaa! it will be interesting to see the facial expression of GM Khismatullin when GM Timofeev made that move.

definitely one of the best moves i've ever seen! simply astounding..

Apr-16-10  operative: Great game. I'm ashamed to say that I am not yet at the point where I can recognize a good game simply by playing it back here- I have to go over it on my chessboard a few times. But I like the 4 pawns- that's my kind of advance.
Apr-16-10  mworld: brilliant game and great pun/title! - much more relevant and thoughtful than most of the 'name o player' pun variety we've had lately.

Apr-16-10  Riverbeast: Is this chess or "Space Invaders"?
Apr-16-10  lzromeu: Indeed b4 - the sacrifice of the year.
At 57: 5 passed pawns, 4 of then connected. I never see that

B4 seems to be a Sumo strategie attack.
Black are pushed off the board
Very criative.

Apr-16-10  Riverbeast: Still, white didn't get a lot out of the opening.

It seems black helped him out by putting all of his pawns on black, exposing the white squares

Even then black probably could have held the draw, but then he let his rook get entombed on b6??

Apr-16-10  Chessmensch: Deep Fritz 12 quickly sees 49. b4 as the preferred move and likes it increasingly with additional think time.
Apr-16-10  ajile: Amazing sequence.
Apr-16-10  DarthStapler: <tpstar> Knight13 is never going to live that one down, is he?
Apr-16-10  Andrew Chapman: How would white respond to 41..a4?

tamar: <Andrew Chapman: How would white respond to 41..a4?>

Probably 42 Ne3 to keep forcing the action as Black must prevent Nd5 trapping the rook.

Black has two options after 42 Ne3
42...e6 or 42...d5 both leading to very interesting play.

Apr-17-10  kevin86: The four pawns bug black like a bunch of beetles (wasn't there a group with a similar name with four singers?-the name seems to ringO a bell)
Apr-20-11  hellopolgar: if 41. .. a4 then white responds with 42 b4, now, black's b6 rook is officially "dead" and black is basically down a knight and the position is therefore hopelessly lost.
Oct-01-11  Yodaman: Look at the board position after white's 41st move and then after white's 50th move.
Nov-14-11  notyetagm: Game Collection: THE PAWN THAT PREVENTS PASSERS: A CARLSEN SPECIA
Nov-11-12  Abdel Irada: I wonder if Black should have tried 40. ...R8a6, ceding no ground. White seems to keep a pull with 41. b4, but that's not the crushing avalanche that actually happened.
Jan-29-15  paavoh: Timofeev's 49.b4 equals the Bishop sac (-Bh3) by Shirov. Always a pleasure to come back to this game.
May-06-15  ToTheDeath: Beautiful pawns, this game is legend.

It looks like a game of Space Invaders!

Sep-28-18  Saniyat24: Timofeev must have nerves of steel to give up his two Rooks, but his four pawns were irrepressible...!
