Kibitzer's Corner
May-29-10  Ychromosome: If 16.Bxd4 Rxe1+ 17.Qxe1 Qxe1+ 18.Kh2 Qh4+ 19.Kg1 Qxg4 and black wins a bishop.
Nov-03-10  Igor Egin: Why did white played 11.h3? They had to protect f2.
Nov-03-10  Igor Egin: I wanted to say "Why did white play".

  FSR: Another funny line would have been 11.Nf3? Qxf2+ 12.Kh1 Qg1+! 13.any Nf2#.

  FSR: Ponzi Scheme.
Sep-22-17  Christoforus Polacco: 11.Be3 Q:h2+ 12.Kf1 N:e3 13.R:e3 Qh1+ 14.Ke2 Q:g2 and Black has 3 pawns per piece. But White is strong also. If 12... N:e5? 13.Nf3! and it's not easy play for Black.
Sep-23-17  sneaky pete: If 11.Be3 Qxh2+ 12.Kf1 Nxe3+ 13.Rxe3? Qh1+ 14.Ke2 Qxd1+ 15.Kxd1 Bxd4 is an easy win. But in this line after 13.fxe3 ..

I don't know what black should play. It's ugly for both sides (13... Qxe5 14.Qf3 ..).

Sep-24-17  Christoforus Polacco: <sneaky> Yeah.... Sorry. I can't to seat at internet after midnight ;) <13.f:e3> Probably - I 've not finished to analyse it... but intuition says me it's not bad 4 Black- a some better is : 13... R:e5 14.Qf3 d5 15.B:d5 Bg4. What do you think ? I don't use any engines. It looks sharp & double-edged.
Sep-27-17  goodevans: I knew I'd seen that pun before: Falkbeer vs R Schurig, 1850

... although in that case Ponziani was the author of the opening rather than one of the players.

Sep-27-17  sneaky pete: After 11.Be3 Qxh2+ 12.Kf1 Nxe3+ may be premature, but 12... Qh1+ 13.Ke2 Qxg2 looks winning

Now if 14.Rg1 Nxe3 and after most other moves ... Rxe5 pinning Be3 will follow.

White missed a good chance earlier in the game. 8... Ng4

invites 9.Bxf7+ Kxf7 10.Ng5+ ..

Sep-27-17  ColeTrane: ponzy schemes are funny things. most kids sell knives, are ppl fall for motivational speakers etc. .... basically a bunch of flat earthers giving they money to one doosh
Sep-27-17  The Kings Domain: Love these vintage gems, it's a marvel they survived. Nice finishing touch by black.
Sep-27-17  kevin86: White's bishop is double pinned and must be lost.
Sep-27-17  Once: Hmm. I wonder if white resigns a little too soon here? As Black has sacrificed a minor piece, white can afford to give that piece back to try to get out of his bind.

Instead of the meek "16. Resigns", 16. Bxf7+ makes black work for the win.

If black responds with 16...Kxf7 white can play 17. Rf1+ and he's doing fine.

If black plays 16...Kh8, all the pieces come off with 17. Bxe8 Bxe3+ 18. Rxe3 Qxe3+ 19. Kh1 Qxe8

Black ought to win with his two extra prawns, but there's no flashy finish in sight.

Or black could play 16...Kf8 17. Bxe8 and we get a line similar to the last one where half the pieces are exchanged.

In human mode, I'd play 16...Bxf7+ as the only move to give us practical chances to stir things up a bit. Switching Fritzie on and he calls it as -2 for 16...Kh8, -1 for 16...Kf8 and +1 for 16...Kxf7. Which sounds about right.

Sep-27-17  catlover: Ponzi schemes depend on people wanting to get rich quick. It's a bit like wanting to get a piece ahead by move 10 with Knight takes d4.

FSR: <Once> Nice resource! Presumably Black would have played on if he'd seen that.
Sep-28-17  Christoforus Polacco: <sneaky> And 4 example : 10... Kg8 11.Q:g4 N:e5 12.Qg3 to control 'd3' square. But after 12....d6 Black IMO stands strong. After pawn's move 'h6' black horse threaten the jump on 'f3' - white's queenside development is a some late. So white bishop must go from 'c1' on 'd2'. It's not too active play....
Sep-28-17  morfishine: <Once> I actually saw <16.Bxf7+>, but I followed up with <17.Qf3+> which is much inferior to your <17.Rf1+>, and brushed the idea aside :(

*****

Sep-29-17  sneaky pete: <Christoforus Polacco> I didn't claim 9.Bxf7+ Kxf7 10.Ng5+ .. is winning, but it's a lot better than the meek 9.cxd4 .. that leads to disaster. After 10... Kg8 11.Qxg4 Nxe5 12.Qf5 g6 13.Qf4 .. threatening Rxe5 .. looks good enough. Maybe white can even ignore Ng4 and after 10... Kg8 play 11.Qd3 ..

with some cute new threats.

Sep-30-17  Christoforus Polacco: <sneaky> 13....Qe7 14.cd B:d4! 15.Q:d4?? Nf3+! 16.gf!(16.N:f3? Q:e1 and next move mate) Q:e1+ 17.Kg2 Q:c1 and show must go on. But yours ...<Maybe white can even ignore Ng4 and after 10... Kg8 play 11.Qd3 ..> ... I love it ! It's idea worthy of P.Morphy & M.Tal :) White can attack by'c4' square in next move and to kill the bishop.
Sep-30-17  Christoforus Polacco: Not quite :) 13...Qe7 14.R:e5! and winning. Also good.
