Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-29-14  TheBish: There must be an error in the scoresheet, as Black's queen is en prise for several moves beginning with move 26, when Black's move is given as 26...a5(??). I believe the move must have been 26...Qa5, saving the queen. If this is correct, then White's 32nd move is not mate, but merely a check -- although completely resignable, as Black is totally busted.
Apr-30-14  JimNorCal: Agree, the score looks wrong.
Well-played attack by Tarjan.

I saw Dennis Fritzinger at various Berkeley tournaments. I remember he used to play the Philidor's Defense. At one point in my innocence I protested "But Reinfeld says that the Philidor's is inferior." He smiled gently and suggested that the opening was perhaps playable despite Fred's opinion.

Phony Benoni: <TheBish> <JimNorCal> In the tournament book edited by Jack Spence the score is exactly as given here (except being in Descriptive Notation). I would agree that 26...P-R4 is surely a typo for 26...Q-R4.

AylerKupp: I don't know, that James Tarjan is a tricky fellow.

I also think you are right; there may have been more moves after 32.Qe6+ but if the game was being entered on a database using standard chess software then no moves could be entered after the apparent mate.

Quite true, and a very common problem, but I don't believe it made a difference here. The tournament book finishes with <32.Q-K6ch, Black Resigns>. No mention of mate, which is another indication Black's queen wasn't on d8.

There seems no doubt that the game's inputter replicated a typo, and that <27...Qa5> was played. Proving that is another matter. It's possible the players themselves, both of whom are still around, might be able to help.

offramp: I am standing outside Fritzinger's house right now. But I do not have the nerve to ring the bell!

Phony Benoni: Maybe you should try ringing the Fritz.

(Not that I'd be any better.)

I'm gonna wait in the shadows until it's dark.
