GrahamClayton: Away from chess, Fritzinger was well-known as a poet:

Jan-11-16  wrap99: Nice guy, one of the first masters I ever met almost 50 years ago. He was a master pre-rating inflation; being CA champ was and is a pretty big deal.

I think of all the chess players I met decades ago without having seen again; always nice to discover they are still around. If I ever start playing live tournaments again, I hope they recognize me and I recognize them.

When I first met Dennis he was just 30 or so; now he is in his 70s. Time is sort of a bitch; don't waste it.

Jan-11-16  andrewjsacks: <wrap99> All well said. Dennis always was a breath of life, and his love for poetry was perhaps even more important to him than his love of chess.
Jan-12-16  wrap99: <andrewjsacks> no idea he is a poet but based on appearances and behavior, it sounds very plausible. I love books about chess players which describe their non-chess lives -- chess claims many fascinating and talented people. Easily some of the best times of my life were at tournaments interacting with such people. Had I not chosen to shake hands with Max Euwe when he appeared at Paul Masson in 1975 or so, I would have not shaken the hand of the man who in turn shook hands with Alekhine and so forth.
Jan-13-16  JimNorCal: I saw him play in a Berkeley tournament or two. I was in a (much) lower section but Dennis was quite approachable. I remember being full of Reinfeld's influence and asking him why he was playing the inferior Philidor's. Dennis mildly replied that the opening was not as bad as its reputation. His lack of defensiveness and good results strongly backed his opinion.
Jun-25-22  wrap99: <JimNorCal> Greetings from 2022 -- Donald Trump will be elected president and u can't believe what happens then. As for Fritzinger's thoughts on the Philidor, I am not up on the latest but it seems to me the superhuman chess minds of the the AIs have probably led to many reappraisals and I wonder if Philidor's defense is indeed now considered more (or even less) playable.
