67th US Open (1966)

Game Collection: US Open 1966, Seattle compiled by User: Phony Benoni

67th US Open
Seattle, Washington
August 14-26, 1966

After the 1965 US Open was held further south and east than ever before, the 1966 edition went the other way. Seattle, Washington, represented the furthest north the tournament had ever ventured, and only the two events in San Francisco were a few degrees of longitude to the left.

The tournament was held at the Seattle Center, site of the 1962 World's Fair. Thirteen rounds were scheduled, one per day from Sunday, August 14 through Friday, August 26, with no off day. However, some fine print stated that, should the total number of entries not exceed 200, the round on Saturday, August 20 would not be played and be replaced by a speed tournament, making twelve rounds in all. As it happened, only 196 players showed up for the first round, but late entries pushed the number to 201 and the full schedule was played.

All games were scheduled for 7:00 pm, except the final round which began at 5:00 pm. The time control was 50 moves in 2½ hours, followed by 20 moves per hour. Games were adjourned after five hours of play and resumed at 10:00 AM the next morning. The tournament director was George Koltanowski, assisted by Burrard Eddy and Eugene Fomin. (1)

Robert Byrne and Pal Benko tied for 1st place over 122 other contestants, both scoring 11-2. No tie breaks were played, so they were declared co-champions. Duncan Suttles took clear 3rd with a 10-3 record, drawing against both co-champions and losing only to William Lombardy and Anthony Saidy. Six players tied 4th-9th, all scoring 9.5-3.5: Anthony Saidy , Arthur Bisguier , Peter Cleghorn , Ivars Alvils Dahlberg , Touradj Saidi and Ronald Joseph Gross .2 17 year old Leroy Jackson proved the strongest Junior in the field, scoring 8.5-4.5 to win the Junior Prize on tie break over U.S. Junior Champion Walter Browne.

(2) "Chess Life", October, 1966, p. 230-231, and Northwest Chess Letter", September 1966, p. 9-17, The version in "Chess Life" gives all the players, but full results for only the top 81 finishers. The version in "Northwest Chess Letter" is complete, but contains numerous errors including listing several players out of their correct score group. I have followed the order of finish from "Chess Life", and tried to reconcile discrepancies.

Here is a curious, perhaps mysterious aspect to this tournament, concerning the recording of moves in the game scores. I got this information from "Quarterly for Chess History (Winter 12/2004)," pp.96-100:

William John Donaldson reports that Peter G Grey , a fellow member of the Mechanic's Institute Chess Club in San Francisco, supplied many new score sheets that tournament director Georges Koltanowski had given to him. Before this time, only "about a dozen" game scores had been published in "Chess Life," "Chess Review," the "Washington Chess Letter," "Sacha Pasaule" and the "New York Times."[1] Oddly, assistant tournament director Buzz Eddy reports that while Koltanowski "did a tremendous job" as tournament director, they held divergent philosophies in regard to recording moves. Eddy claims that "in this event no recording was actually required, whereas in any event directed by your writer (meaning Eddy), recording is mandatory as each move is played."[2] Is it possible that the scores Koltanowski passed to Peter Grey existed only because Eddy insisted that the players record their moves?

Would you like to clarify this?

<MissScarlett>

I will post more of what Donaldson wrote verbatim:

"It would seem unlikely at this late date, for a flood of games to suddenly appear, but that is just what happened for the Seattle U.S Open. Just before this year's Championship, Peter Grey, a fellow member of the Mechanics' Institute Chess Club in San Francisco, told me he had many more sheets from the Seattle 1966 Open thanks to the tournament director for the event, the late George Koltanowski. Peter explained that George had given him the scores many years before and would I like to make copies of them. Thanks to Peter's generosity it has been possible to bring the number of available games from the event to 191. Previously only about a dozen game scores had been published in 'Chess Life,' 'Chess Review,' the 'Washington Chess Letter,' 'Sacha Pasaule' and the 'New York Times.'"

I believe <Phony Benoni> also has a copy of <Quarterly for Chess History (Winter 12/2004)>, so he may weigh in with more clarification.

0h!

If you were referring only to the reference itself:

<[John Donaldson, 'The Forgotten US Open in Seattle 1966' Chess Life, Oct. 1966, p.231. Reprinted in Quarterly for Chess History (Winter 12/2004), pp.96-97]>

'The Quarterly for Chess History (Winter 12/2004)' reprinted John Donaldson's October, 1966 'Chess Life' article.

I am not sure if the entire article was reprinted, but if anyone has access to this issue of 'Chess Life' they might look on page 231 to see if there was any more to the article. Or see if Fiala got the reference details correct in the first place...

That's my point. John Donaldson was only 8 in 1966.

And a good point it is sir.

So "door number two" was the answer: <...Or see if Fiala got the reference details correct in the first place...>

Any one or more of the details in that faulty reference may be incorrect. I'm not sure how we might figure this out unless someone has a good run of 'Chess Life' to investigate.

I'm not sure if this is any help, but here are the sources <Phony Benoni> lists in his introduction:

  MissScarlett: <Chess Life> is online: https://new.uschess.org/chess-life-...

Not unexpectedly, the October 1966 issue didn't claim the August event had been forgotten.

Well thanks to your diligence and (warranted) distrust of Fiala in general, at least the corrective material is documented now in this thread.

Also thank you for posting the Chess Life web link.

Phony Benoni: As you realize by now, "The Forgotten US Open" was the title of Donaldson's article in QCH. His introduction there quotes, among other sources, the "Chess Life" article and Eddy's article from "Northwest Chess Letter" (of which Eddy was the editor).

The "Chess Life" article is unattributed, but is the sort of thing Koltanowski would contribute after a US Open, containing a game or two and some anecdotes.

The "Northwest Chess Letter" is also available online:

http://www.nwchess.com/nwcmag/pdf/N...

The scoresheet stuff starts at the bottom of the first column on p. 7. By the way, much of this publication is available, if you collect this sort of thing. I've found it very useful over the years:

http://www.nwchess.com/nwcmag/NWC_s...

Don't get me started on scoresheets. I figure I've gone through upwards of 40,000 to 50,000 handwritten scores over the years. It's one of things that ruined my eyesight.
