In the 1970s, Ruth Herstein was one of the leading female chess players in the United States, often participating in the United States Women's Chess Championship. Her best results were in 1975 and 1976, when she tied for 2nd-3rd. She played for the United States in the Women's Chess Olympiads in 1974, 1976, and 1978.

Daughter of Marton Herstein. She was married to Kenneth Fitzgerald from 1969 to 1973.

  Stonehenge: The Herstein family went into hiding, I believe in 1942. All survived the war I think, but more information would be welcome.
