Dec-15-10  ChessYouGood: Nøgne Ø, Ægir Bryggeri and Haandbryggeriet are three Norwegian brewers. See http://www.ratebeer.com/BestInMyAre... for a list of the best 25 Norwegian beers. Magnus and other Norwegian 20 year olds can buy some and drink some now.
Dec-15-10  apexin: Good game by Magnus.

An Englishman: Good Evening: I still don't get it; what do GMs and Super-GMs see in 3...dxe4? "Oh, delightful! I get defend a tedious position with no counterplay for 50 moves with hopes for nothing more than a draw at the end!" If that's how they think, then I *never* "Thought like a Grandmaster."
Dec-16-10  jaguarz: 22.e5??? worst move
Dec-16-10  mike1: Jaguarz: ok, 22nd... e5 and black misses a pawn... but what would you play?
Dec-16-10  Llawdogg: This kid is really good.
Dec-16-10  Dupin: <this kid is pretty good. Can he drink beer yet?>

Yes, here in Norway he has been able to drink beer for two years now.

Dec-16-10  Dupin: <dcarlisle: this kid is pretty good. Can he drink beer yet? No , he is only 20 years old.>

Wrong, he can drink beer in Norway. He has been able to for two years now. The limit is 18 here.

Dec-16-10  Eyal: In the position after 22.Kf2 White can win a pawn in a few moves anyway, since Black can't hold b7 for long. For example, there's the idea of c3-Nxc8 (c3 is so that the rook doesn't attack c2 after this exchange)-Rd7. Trying to bring the king to the centre with 22...Kf8 doesn't work because of 23.Bb5! (threatening Bd7!) and the king has to go back to g8. Relatively best, perhaps, was 22...f6 23.c3 Kf7, and in case of 24.Bf3 followed by Nxc8 & Bxb7 Black might have chances of saving the endgame because of the bishops of opposite color. Btw, note that another attempt for "activity" with 22...Bc5 is refuted immediately by 23.Rd8+.
Dec-16-10  patzerboy: Quite a comeback in this tournament from an almost disastrous start to win it. Bravo!
Dec-16-10  JonathanJ: <Dupin: Wrong, he can drink beer in Norway. He has been able to for two years now. The limit is 18 here.>

actually, you can drink beer as a 5 year old. you're just not allowed to.

Dec-16-10  Dupin: <actually, you can drink beer as a 5 year old. you're just not allowed to.>

Indeed.

Dec-16-10  kevin86: Breakaway! The pawn will queen.
Dec-16-10  jakaiden: LOL French Toast!!! I can't stop laughing!
Dec-16-10  WhiteRook48: french toast...

A disaster in this game and the whole tournament for Nigel. It was simply about development. Black couldn't develop his c8 bishop, which meant he couldn't connect rooks, and he was completely annihlated and tied in knots.

Lethal by the world number 1!

French toast - Great pun :-)

Nigel wins the best commentator prize though. - Head and heels above the rest!

Dec-16-10  chessmartialartist: @jaikaden I have been laughing for two hours since i saw that title. If I cant stop my laughter within the next hour i think i will need to see a doctor.
Dec-17-10  Eyal: After 22.Kf2, a line given by Dennis Monokroussos on his blog that might be even better for White than what I suggested earlier (and demonstrates how difficult Black's position is when he gives up the pawn with 22...e5): 22...f6 23.Rd4! e5 [forced - otherwise 24.Rc4 wins a piece] 24.Rd5 Bf5 25.Bd3 [better than 25.c3 Rd8 26.Rxa5 Rd2] 25...Bxd3 26.cxd3 Rd8 [or 26...Bb4 27.Rb5 and 28.Nd5; 26...Bd8 27.Nc4 b6 28.Rd7 followed by Nd6 and Black is utterly passive] 27.Rxa5 Rxd3 28.Rb5 followed by Nd5.
Dec-29-10  Johnny O: Short (2680) played a 2411 tournament on his home court. It appears that he will fall out of the top 60 in FIDE's December ratings. In my personal opinion sub 2700 (live ratings last update 12/23/10) players such as Efimenko are stronger than him.
