Jan-26-11  waustad: He passed on the draw by repetition earlier to get a slightly worse position, by Stockfish's estimation.
Jan-26-11  AdrianP: Maybe White has a chance of holding R+g-pawn against B+h-pawn, so Black would like to keep Qs on.
Jan-26-11  norami: Shipov says 50 . . . Qd3 wins.
Jan-26-11  vonKrolock: black can exchange his 'h5' ♙ for both "b" an 'c' white ones - or still search for something stronger !?
Jan-26-11  Eyal: Yeah, Shipov may be right:

<49…Qc3! There’s the refutation. Black is no longer playing for pawns.

50. Qf4 And now, again, you shouldn’t take anything. 50…Qd3!, with the threat of Rg6-g4 or Rg6-f6, is decisive. As soon as the rook is free to move the white king will perish.

[If 50. Qe5 then 50...Qf3!]>

Jan-26-11  AdrianP: Yes, Qd3 followed by Rg5 looks pretty terminal.
Jan-26-11  achieve: Shipov is right,, Black Queen can do all kinds of hoolahoops on the 3rd rank (even 2nd in some cases) and white is shy for moves, W-queen must leave her protection of the pawn duo, and then...
Jan-26-11  AdrianP: I mean ...Rg4 (White/Black dyslexia)
Jan-26-11  Eyal: No, Nepo got materialistic... Well, if you take off the queens it's winning for Black, but can Black force that?

Gypsy: <Eyal: No, Nepo got materialistic... Well, if you take off the queens it's winning for Black, but can Black force that?>

It should be doable; the position of White king did not get much better.

Jan-26-11  vonKrolock: the black King goes to 'h5' and becomes also an attacking piece
Jan-26-11  Maatalkko: So has Carlsen escaped?
Jan-26-11  vonKrolock: ... or manoeuvrate till 'f6' ...
Jan-26-11  achieve: <eyal> He can keep pressure on White threatening on g2/via white squares and eventually win the h-pawn, after which it is curtains, even with queens on the board. White is still constrained and keeps running out of moves.

  chancho: Carlsen is lost.
Jan-26-11  Arcturus: The black king can move around with no worries but white can only harass the black king in a way that keeps the queens on the board. Nepo has a lot of time to look for a win and nothing to lose.
Jan-26-11  Eyal: I gather that Carlsen was also in severe time trouble (so some of Nepo's last king moves may have been just "for move’s sake"), but at least he didn't flag.
Jan-26-11  Kazzak: Amusing Kf6, instead of Kf4 - would have preferred the latter, seems to obviously block better.
Jan-26-11  Kazzak: But there it is, victory to Napalm!
Jan-26-11  crazybird: Nepo, the brave
Jan-26-11  rapidcitychess: Nepomniachtchi won, that's gonna steal a lot of Carlsen's chances.
Jan-26-11  DEEPERGRAY: why h5 ?
keep the pawn on the dark squares .. no?
