Nov-15-12  notyetagm: V Gunina vs A Galliamova, 2012

Wow, this is the worst game I have ever seen Gunina, the reigning Women's European Champion, play. She could just resign after 15 ... ♕c5-a5, and she loses the <TRAPPED> White a4-knight for zero compensation.

She picked a *really* bad time to play a bad game.

Nov-15-12  notyetagm: Repertoire Explorer: Valentina Gunina (white)

Wow, the Opening Explorer shows that this is the very first time Gunina has ever played the <LONDON SYSTEM>, using the move order 1 d2-d4 d7-d5 2 ♗c1-f4. She had always met 1 ... d7-d5 with 2 c2-c4, the strongest move. :-)

She picked a really, really bad time for an openings experiment. I guess she thought she was catching her opponent by surprise. She caught *herself* by surprise. Hard to imagine that such a strong White player as Gunina would be dead lost on move 15 if she had stayed in her repertoire.

Honza Cervenka: This loss was a consequence of just one nad move. Well, perhaps 10.0-0-0 wasn't the best idea (I would have castled KS here) but after 11.Bd3 instead of 11.Ba4?? nothing so much grave is happening yet. 11.Ba4 was decisive mistake.
Nov-21-12  Nerwal: Still, even after 11. ♗a4 white could try to do something. Instead of 14. ♖d3, moves like 14. c4, 14. ♘d4 or 14. ♖he1 do look like a better chance. And 15. ♖hd1 as well, in order to meet 15... ♕a5 with 16. e4!?. White completely lost the thread and made one bad move after another, as it happens sometimes. Maybe that's a psychological whiplash after black's incorrect handling of the very first moves, as the resulting position of 6. ♗b5+ ♔f8 was not planned beforehand; Alisa admitted so at the press conference and she thought her position was just awful...
