May-22-25  Walter Glattke: I have 17.Rxh6 f5? !8.Qh1 mating no suggestion moves, but priority defense moves.17.Rxh6 gxh6 18.Qh1 Bg5 19.Bxg5 hxg5 20.Qh7+ Kf8 21.Qh8+ Ke7 22.Qf6+ Kd7 23.Qxf7+ Re7 24.Qg6 c4 25.Bc2 b5 26.Nxg5 Bb7 b) 17.Bxh7 f5 18.g5 c4 19.Bxg7 Kxg7 20.Qg1 Rh8 21.Bc2 Rxh1 22.Qxh1 Qh8
May-22-25  King.Arthur.Brazil: The king feels tempted by the 2 possibles sacrifices: Rxh6 or Bxh6. For the first: 17. Rxh6 gxh6 18. Bxh6 f5 19. gxf5 exf5 20. Qg1+ Kf7 21. Qg7+ Ke6 22. Bb5 Bf6 23. exf6 Qxf6 24. Ng5+ Ke5 25. Qc7+ Qd6 26. Bg7#. On the other option: 17. Bxh6 gxh6 18. Rxh6 f5 19. exf6 Bxf6 20. Bh7+ Kf8 21. Qg6 and mate is near.
May-22-25  mel gibson: That wasn't hard.

Stockfish 17 says:

17. Bxh6

(17. Bxh6 (1.Bxh6 c4 2.Bh7+ Kf8 3.Bf4 Bc5 4.Bc2 Ke7 5.Bg5+ Kd7 6.Bxd8 Kxd8 7.b4 cxb3 8.axb3 b5 9.b4 Bb6 10.Nd4 Bd7 11.Bd3 a6 12.Qf1 Rf8 13.Qf4 Kc7 14.e4 Bxd4 ) +7.85/40 309)

score for White +7.85 depth 40.

May-22-25  watwinc: <Walter Glattke> I went for 17 Rxh6 as well, which my Stockfish marginally prefers.

scormus: Spoilt for choice. Which to play, 17 Bxh6, Rxh6, or g5?

17 Bxh6 was the first to come to mind, but I preferred Rxh6 to free h1 straight away and also to retain the DSB. I thought both would work, but if I was playing OTB in a team game I might have choen the less commital g5.

According to SF they are all clerly winning, with a bigger advantage to W after 17 R/Bxh6 B and if B accepts sac on h6. About the same advantage to W if B declines.

May-22-25  murkia: <scormus>: Spoilt for choice indeed! Or even Bh7+ which according to the CG engine also wins.
May-22-25  Mayankk: The first idea which came to mind was the pretty 17 Bh7+ Kf8 ( 17... Kh8 18 Bxh6 gxh6 19 Rxh6 looks terrible) 18 Rxh6 gxh6 19 Bxh6#.

Or course 18... gxh6 wasn't forced. But anything else and we have more tactics at our disposal like 19 Bg6, 20 Qxg6, 21 Rh8+ etc.

So while the ending is hard to visualize, Black King is so lonely and helpless that most sacrifices work.

May-23-25  AlekhineEnthusiast: I suspected that immediate sacrifices on the king side would win but I went with Bb5 first. That bishop is just in the way. Stockfish evaluates it as a win though not as strong as the game moves. But the variations are easier to see -- at least for me.

  dheilke: My line is 17. Rxh6 gxh6 18. Qh1 Bg5 19. Nxg5 hxg5 20. Qh6‼ restricting the black king and offering a choice for ways to die.

After that, SF chooses 20. ... Ba6, which was absolutely not on my radar. Oh, well - 21. Bxa6 Re7 22. Rh1 f6 23. Qh8+ Kf7 24. Qxf6+ Ke8 25. Rh8+ Kd7 26. Rxd8+

and Black has the choice of 26. ... Kxd8 Bxg5 losing the pinned rook, or 26. ... Rxd8 27. Bb5+ getting murdered on the light squares. I think it's hilarious that the Bf4 gets to "taunt" the pawn on g5 for several moves, and black never has time to take it...

May-23-25  Walter Glattke: dheike: In my first comment I had 20.Qh7+ instead 20.Qh6. but there is nö mating after 20.- Qd7 (only Qd7) 21.Bh7+ Kh8 22.Bg6+ Kg8 23.Qh7+ Kf8 24.Bxg5 f6 25.Qh8+ Ke7 26.Qxf6+ Kd6 and Kc6 Sf would play 21.Bxa6 gxf4 22.Bd3 f5 23.gxf5 Qd7 -+ In my first line above white had better chances with 27.Nf7, but where is the mate so far?
