Apr-21-14  goldenbear: 11.Be2?! smells weak. 11.Ba6? is obviously not the answer though. I don't know what Black's best 11th move is, but it can't be Ba6. What about 11.e5 for Black? If 12.e4, then 12.exd4 exploits the fact that White has not castled.
Apr-21-14  Kinghunt: <What about 11.e5 for Black?>

It fails tactically, <exploit[ing] the fact that [Black] has not castled>.

All look decent for black to my eye. The ...f5 move was insisted upon in many variations.

Apr-21-14  Ulhumbrus: The move 30 Ng6 offers an exchange of knights, although an attacker will generally want to avoid exchanges. This suggests that White considers Black's knight at least as valuable as his own knight. This suggests that Black is advised to decline the offer and to play 30...Nf5
Apr-21-14  Ulhumbrus: As the move 17 ...c5 invites 18 d5 this suggests keeping the c6 pawn back.

The move 16 c4 weakens the d4 pawn and this suggests doubling Black's rooks on the d file.

White's bishop on g5 prevents the move 17...Red8 and this suggests 17...Be7. Besides, the move 17...Be7 offers an exchange of pieces in a position where White has more space and will want to attack.

Be2 is not weak!,just like in the Sicilian Scheveningen it's deceptively strong, preparation for King side Attack, well anticipated by Carlsen,a brilliant game strategy by the world champ!

keypusher: <goldenbear: 11.Be2?! smells weak. 11.Ba6? is obviously not the answer though. I don't know what Black's best 11th move is, but it can't be Ba6....>

Why is trading off the problem bishop <obviously not the answer>?

Apr-21-14  goldenbear: <Kinghunt>, you know, that's a pretty good point... LOL. Maybe 11.O-O! then... <keypusher> It seems to me like this is one of those unusual QGD's where exchanging light-bishops is to White's advantage. If I were Black I would be thinking, "How can I make my light-bishop the best minor piece on the board?". JMHO...
Apr-21-14  goldenbear: <keypusher> Basically, 11.Ba6 can't be right because White should have played 11.Bd3. When I was a kid, 11.Be2? would have received a summons to the Inquisition...
Apr-21-14  goldenbear: Of course, I'm being dogmatic about 11.Be2. It's a matter of style. Botvinnik would probably prefer Be2, whereas Alekhine might throw up and demand Bd3...
Apr-21-14  Everett: <goldenbear> So what did you think of Carlsen taking two moves to get to Bd3 vs Naka?
Apr-21-14  Shams: <Everett> I can't lie, I scratched my head when I saw that. If one of my rugrats played that move I'd probably click my tongue at them!
Apr-21-14  Everett: <Shams> I gave it some amateur thought, and posted on that game's page. Let me know what you think...

How are your Reti games going, BTW?

Apr-21-14  Shams: <Everett> I'll answer in my forum, then check your thoughts on Magnus' <Bd3>.
Apr-22-14  peristilo: Sauron keeps doing nothing an winning! It takes more than a brave samurai to do the job!
Apr-22-14  k009ris: Carlsen is so calm! g4 was a cool move to see.I think only Caruana has a chance to get him (in the future).
Apr-22-14  amosianboy: Magnus Carlsen! The greatest MC! "Chesstacular!" "I'm beginning to feel like a Chess God, (Chess God) all my people from the front to the back nod, (back nod) now who thinks their nerves are hard enough to stand war? Let me show you why I have the all time high score!"
Apr-22-14  Robyn Hode: When you select this defense you deserve nothing less than no real counterplay and a loss.
Apr-27-14  1d410: Looks like Carlsen won this game in a more convincing fashion than the Gelfand one. Gelfand must have gotten that opening right after all :P
Jul-28-14  onam: 7 ...exd5 leads to Carlsbad structure where the queen on a5 is doing nothing
Jul-28-14  onam: 28.a3! Pushing the bishop back to a further passive post on a5.
Jul-28-14  onam: 8 Rc1 This rare continuation has recently become quite popular.
Oct-11-19  thegoodanarchist: This is one of those GM games where I don't understand about 10 of the moves, and realize I am hopeless for becoming a titled player.
Oct-12-19  SChesshevsky: <thegoodanarchist> Trying to understand Carlsen's reason for each move probably has to improve one's game even if it doesn't guarantee making master.

One good bet seems to be that his move relates either to: some sort of positional gain goal like effective outpost, long term protected passed pawn, or control of invasion capable file or diagonal.

Or some sort of restrictive move that hampers opportunities for an opponents piece. Especially N or B or pawn push or break.

Or setting up or setting off some sort of combination that cashes in on his positional advantage.

One thing I like to do is watch Carlsen's blitz videos and try to guess his upcoming moves.
