Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-06-22  jerseybob: A striking position after 15.Ng3?!; the gathering of the knights, but with a key difference: white's are milling about aimlessly, while black's are laser-focused (15.Ne5 might be better). Plus white has wasted tempi with his king rook and king bishop. 18..Nf7! is the beginning of the end.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Methinks today's title refers not to Van Gogh but to the American Don McLean, whose song about the painter includes many instances of the phrase "starry starry night."

As for the game, White's 5.b3 does not look obviously passive until 7...h6, which does well in the database. He probably had to brave the difficult main lines of 5.Nf3 or 5.Qc2.

OhioChessFan: Yes, <AE> and the name of that song is "Vincent".
Feb-06-23  watwinc: 24 … Qxg3 looks much better.
Feb-06-23  CivilDisobedience: WHY 21. Kf2 ?
Feb-06-23  Honey Blend: <CivilDisobedience: WHY 21. Kf2 ?>

Allows White to hang on to the extra material in the short term, although it can be argued that 21. ♖xf2 ♕xg3 22. ♖f3 while holding the e5 pawn, might have better defended the position at the cost of a pawn.

Feb-06-23  goodevans: <watwinc: 24 … Qxg3 looks much better.>

Agreed. Black can win back the piece with 24...Qe4+ 25.Kf2 Qc2+ but saving that bishop at the cost of a rook was a real lemon.

Feb-06-23  faulty: I wonder if the Author of the pun also meant that, in Slavonic languages, the root 'ska*' means jumping, and there are languages where the 'knight' is called exactly like that, e.g. skoczek in Polish. if that's what was meant by the Author, then RESPECT
